Does anybody know a reliable source to get gold bars or coins measuring 1 gram in weight? I am aiming for something around $40 or $50 because the current melt value is around $40 per gram. Please don't give a link to an Ebay auction unless it's Buy It Now. I recently was watching an auction, and when it closed, the winning bidder paid DOUBLE the melt value. I already own a few ounces of silver, and I think that either 1 gram or coins in grain measurements would be the best for my available money. I am only going to buy 24 k gold. I also realize that a coin would have numismatic value along with melt value, so it may be better to buy a coin if possible.
Apmex.com for one. Remember 1 gm bullion bars and other low count gram PMs carry a high premium. Try to save up and buy larger bars or buy in bulk where the per piece premium should be lower.
Recognized coins are your best bet (Eagles, Maples, ect). Yesterday was a better day to buy than today!
I would stay away from grains or grams. a lot of the listings that you see (other than from reputable companies) are for plated items or the shipping is so high that it negates any investment you are making. I consider these novelty items not investment items.
Yeah.. there are a ton of fraudulent auctions on Ebay that make you beleive that you are buying a gold coin, only to realize after reading the description that it is just plated. Do you know of any reputable companies, besides APMEX, who does have pretty fair pricing.
I'm from Canada so I'll let the pros from the other side of the border give you some recommendations.
Try smaller gold coins such as 2 peso Mexican. They have .0482 oz and are .900 fine. http://www.providentmetals.com/mex-2-peso-gold.html Could be had here for $62.00 currently. They will be much easier to sell in the future than some of those off brand bars. I have also seen 1/20 oz coins from Australia and Isle of Man.
The Mexican coins have nice designs and the gold is a nice color but they are not 24k (.9999) and I believe the OP wanted pure gold bars or coins. To the OP: Remember to figure out the premiums you will be paying on small 1/10th, 1/20th oz coins and small gram bars is quite significant. You may seriously considering saving up for larger bars or coins because a portion of what you are paying for in smaller PMs is greatly over spot by comparison.
The 1 gram bars are novelty items and you might regret the purchase. If you are on a limited budget, one ounce silver coins are a better choice in my opinion.
Have you ever seen a 1 gram bar? It's about as big as your finger nail. It would blow away in a gust of wind. If you are short on cash and feel the need to buy PMs ..stick with silver. Get some nice generic rounds and built a stack you can see without a magnifying glass.
Provident Metals has some pretty good bars.. a PAMP Suisse for $48. I already own 4 ounces of .999 silver in American Eagle and Canadian Maple Leaf coins, and I am probably going to get the 2010 Silver Eagle somewhere also. Provident has it for $20. Also, about saving for a 1 oz. gold bar, it would be possible for me to purchase one of the bars, but I don't know if I would want to have something with that much of a value in my house. My computer isn't even worth that much money! I would probably need to have a safe bolted to the ground, which would cost even more money... But still - I do realize that the smaller bars have high prices over the standard spot prices, so if I do decide to get gold, I will definitely have to compare a lot of prices, also with my local coin shop.
On Apmex, or most other sites for that matter, a 1 gram gold bar runs +/- $50. One would gather that a 5 gram should run $250, right? Well it's +/- $200...thus representing the premium that is placed on such a small amount of gold (1 gram) possibly resulting from costs associated with creating such a small amount, packaging, engraving, etc. Just my thoughts... You can look into the smallest size safety deposit box at your bank and avoid the cost, security and trouble of a safe in your home. Yes an SDB is an expense but it's a good investment. For a starting investor with a small amount of PMs, coins, whatever, you can store there with plenty of space left over. Put all your silver, gold, diplomas, insurance policy papers, passport and more things of importance there for safe keeping. You should definitely save up and buy the larger coins/bars rather than these tiny gram bars with huge premiums.
What is a huge premium on a gram bar? I bought one yesterday for 40$ . I went in to my local guy looking to buy a 2 1/2 peso coin I saw there last week and it was gone. I asked him if he had anything in that range and he offered a gram bar that was in a little bezel for 40$ so I grabbed it. It looks like it could be mounted on a chain. He sold me a 1/10 oz. AGE for 120 last wednesday I thought that was a decent price considering what the seem to sell for from AMPEX and provident . I buy a lot of unpopular silver off him and I pay cash only too so maybe that helps
