i couldn't find any thread re: the label. I'm a noob would like to know how rare that label is? i know many on this board loathe and discourage buying slabs...but can anyone provide any insight re: the NGC 25th anniv label? are they that much rarer? have prior versions appreciated much? current prices on ebay are going for 150 - that's like +7x spot.

Thats funny when they only celebrated the 20th anniversary of the ASE in 2006 (4 years ago). Maybe that's why it's hot ..for comic relief ..as a misprint collectable..who knows.

The label means nothing to me but then again I would buy a silver eagle graded anyways. They are bullion always have been and always will be. Getting them slabbed is like throwing good money down the drain in my IMO.

:eating:I looked at the NGC population report.
There are 619,794 graded with the early release label. MS69=585,425 MS70=34,329
There are 28,626 graded with the plain label. MS69=25,286 MS70=3,322

There were 165,087 graded for 2009 and 648,420 graded for 2010.
So to me it doesn't look like 2010 is that rare since they have already graded almost 4x as many.

What is really funny is 2006 wasn't really the 20th anniversary. 2006 would have been the 21st year of them making the coins.:mouth:

I believe there is language in the law authorizing the ASEs that requires the silver to be mined in the US. The demand has gotten so high that the program is using up most of the available resource. When the Silver Users Association starts to complain, the series might be discontinued completely [that's just my guess].

I don't think it is the silver scarcity but the lack of "official" businesses to make the plankets and the man power at the mint to make them. If they wanted, they could hire more people and get more businesses approved to make plankets and mint these coins. However, I read that this would require a 5 year contract minimum. The mint is betting on there not being such a demand in the future and so no need to expand the business. Although this high demand has now been going on for about 3 years now. Had they hired the staff and expanded the "official" businesses that make these plankets 3 years ago, they wouldn't be advertising shortages......which is just an excuse.

I read this in an early edition of Coin World.

The US produced 36 million ounces of silver in 2008 and probably close to that in 2009, and with the growth in the ASE program, it seems logical to me that this has to be a tremendous strain on the domestic system. ASEs are basically using up most domestic silver production. Can anyone confirm that ASEs must be minted from US production? I'm going from memory on that one [always dangerous]. If it's true, there might be a limit on the theoretical production that I'm sure nobody ever expected to exceed.

You are not automatically 1 years old on the day you were born. Likewise, the series is not one year old until 1987 rolled around. 2006 was technically the 20th year anniversary of the program. I guess it is all symantics and how you want to look at things. So basically its like Schatzy said, whether or not you are counting the first year.

So the year 2011 may be the 25th anniversary of the eagles. Also it may be something like the 5th anniversary of the Buffalo coin.. or not. Maybe something different next year or maybe not.

Think we went through the same thing in 2006 with the 20th anniversary stuff. If memory serves me right the mint begun the Eagle program in 1986 and while we did have two coins with the minting of the 1987 Eagles , it has only been one year since the coins inception. Two coins but only one year since its birth . I could be wrong , or I could be right. Just bring on something different next year maybe another reverse proof Eagle or a reverse proof Buffalo. Maybe the mint could accurately rename the Buffalo a Bison and then the TPG could label these as first year of issue.

  14. Prediction: The ASE series ends/changes design in 2011 with a 25th anniversary limited edition proof set containing the 2009, 2010 and 2011 issues. TC

Coins aren't born. It is customary to count the number of years of issue.
