I'm making a few capital purchases this month, and it's a toss-up between the credit card that offers about 0.75% back in reward points PLUS a two-year warranty extension vs. the card that gives 5% back on the first $1500 this quarter if I use it to fund PayPal purchases. For the phone and washer, the extended warranty was the clear winner. For the guitar... still haven't decided.
Inflation is good if you have a lot of debt (especially fixed rate debt), but bad for everything you may need to buy or anything you want to buy.
I have never purchased an extended warranty on anything in particular on a phone or washer, perhaps pushing luck, the phone in particular will more than likely be upgraded in the near future, the washer, they usually last for a min of 10 years and in most cases the other half (She who rules the roost) will tell you when it it time to upgrade the washer. Your choice but I have always gone by the rule if they offer you an extended warranty are they expecting it to break down soon?? Have a great day. Phil
AMEX is a great card but the yearly fee is extreme. I cancelled mine when I retired. My bank business card offers me about the same as AMEX. Phil
To clarify, this Citi MasterCard offers two years of warranty extension for free on items I purchase with it. I agree with your assessment of purchased extended warranties. The last time I bought one was for a portable DVD player I got at Circuit City. The retailer went under before the warranty ran out, and the player outlasted both of them.
You have to be able to utilize the benefits and rewards, you can offset the yearly fee almost entirely if you do, have not paid for a hotel in over 10 years thanks to those points.
We get benefits and rewards from our cards without a yearly fee. It's simple enough to do the math, though, if you know your spending patterns. @mpcusa, you travel more than we do, and I don't doubt you come out ahead with AMEX. Last time I ran the numbers, we wouldn't have -- but that was quite a few years ago. If anything, we travel less now than we used to, though.
You just pick the card that works best for you, AMEX is primarily a travel card but I use it for everything, groceries eating out paying bills, I can use it for all my utilities which is an added bonus
