There are two noticeable areas on the obverse of the coin where there are breaks in the frosting/burnishing. One area in particular is right smack on Abigail's nose and it is really obvious. Had it not been for that one particular spot, I would have kept it. Usually, I can find one or two "flaws" on a one of these coins, but not enough to make me send it back, but this proof is perfect in all sense of the word. This is, for a lack of a better word....an "PR70" coin. I always use a 16x loupe when looking over these coins. I know that is overkill, but I like to think about it as getting to know my coin.
With virtually not much in the way of gold this year so far , the secondary market reacts to price faster than the Mint. I like the unmarried Presidents both in proof and uncirculated. In 2007 I bought about twenty pieces at spot or a little below. Some were slabbed 69s and 70s (4).I do like the Jefferson and Jackson very much. I was not going to buy these, but some of the lady liberties are just great eye candy.
jaceravone and I were discussing this very point (Proof vs. Unc) a while back. If I had to "pull in my horns" (no pun intended :whistle and focus my collection on one type of coin or the other, I would choose the Proof series. Here's my reasons why... Value = Collector Base / Mintage Although the Unc coins have the lowest mintages, the First Spouse series coins have much better eye appeal in Proof than Unc (imo) and I think the increase in the "Collector Base" of the Proof series will more than offset the difference in "Mintage".
A famous maker of German arms maker made a unique break through in arms (1929). They made some small .25 auto pieces. Low powered , expensive ammo, and not quit as an effective as a stick. People complained. Walther discontinued production. After a few years one could not be found, Then a few were found and because of their numbers, were highly collectible. Today for a mint piece you can pay six times the going rate for a pre-war PPK NIB in say .32.People create collectibles in some ways that are unforeseen at the time of production. So shall it be low mintage or exceptional eye appeal ?
I go for low mintage. I'd sell my 2008 W Buff proof set anyday before my precious Burnished Set. Also bought the L. Adams coin Unc. Did A Harrison take the new key slot. If she did I congradulate her, she deserves it just for simply wearing that funky fresh hat of hers:vanish:!
Hey! I kinda liked Anna's "French Parlor Maid" look. It looks like 3537 is a new low number for the Anna Harrison Unc! :hail: ...which represents the "maximum" number of people that can EVER have a complete set. Actually, the REAL number is 3534, because I got four (4) of the Uncs and I ain't sell'n! Look out for the Letitia/Julia Tyler coins...they may be the next ones to make new lows. I suspect folks will be saving up for the Buchanan and Lincoln coins and pass on the Tylers.
the mintage for anna harrison or all other modern coins will be very much lesser than their original final mintage. because a lot were being sent to slab. so the one with original box and c.o.a. that we care about it are becoming lesser and lesser. right yakpoo.
You are correct! :thumb: However, I'm concerned about the fakes coming from China. They're made of gold (not sure how pure, though) and look pretty darn good! It doesn't take a rocket scientist to realize they can send their real coin to a TPG for slabbing and replace it with a fake...original packaging, original COA! ...who's gonna know? :kewl: Personally, I buy from the Mint or a PCGS/NGC slab...that's it! :hammer:
I would have to be Nancy of course as Jane was never First Lady. I expect that if the series makes it to Reagan, the Nancy coin would be a quick sell out. So would Jackie K., Betty Ford, Lady Byrd Johnson, Eleanor Roosevelt and maybe even Pat Nixon. I'm not sure if Hillary, Rosslyn Carter, the two Bush women and Michelle Obama will get a coin as their husbands are still alive. They can't issue a FS coin until the presidential coin is released and they are not allowed to do this while the president is still living. It's not clear by the ambiguous wording of the program if the Mint was to continue it forever, or just for the presidents eligible when the bill was signed into law.
Actually, it's neither of those two options...it's whether or not a president is eligible to be honored before the program ends. The program can be later reenacted, but only by an Act of Congress. As I read Title 31, 5112(n) "Redesign and Issuance of Circulating $1 Coins Honoring Each of the Presidents of the United States"... A president has to be deceased at least two (2) years when their turn comes up. The program ends when all eligible Presidents are so honored. You have to jump around the code a bit to get all the details... In other words, if Jimmy E. or George H. W. kick it in the next four (4) years, they (and their Spouse...living or dead) would get a coin. Unless we start going through Presidents at a rate of four (4) per year, the program will eventually end. EDIT: Here's a thought...if Bill Jeff has a massive coronary in the next couple of years...and Hillary somehow becomes President, she could get a Spouse coin, but not a President coin...interesting. I wonder if Bill Jeff would get a Spouse coin once Hillary dies...assuming they renew the program at some later date...he probably should. It's anyone's guess what the artist would have him doing in the Oval Office! Kiss
Technically, only one pres was unmarried. The others were widowed. I can't imagine congress not continuing the program for every president in the future. Who is going to stand up against an Obama coin? This is one reason I like the series; we will have spikes in interest for as long as we elect presidents who die.
In your hypothetical Bill would only be eligible for a First Spouse coin in the even he was still alive and married to Hillary at the time she was inaugurated as Prez; otherwise, he wouldn't be a First Spouse.
Under the "current" legislation, Bill Jeff would only get a Spouse coin if Hillary was President AND dead for at least two (2) years once her turn comes around. Given the timeline, that would require Hillary to be elected in 2012, then assasinated by early 2014! (I don't think Bill Jeff wants a spouse coin THAT badly!) Congress can always renew the program at some later date to honor newly eligible Presidents and Spouses.
That Jackson ain't too shabby......a RAW UNC. sold on Feebay last night for $1100+ !!!!!!! Two bidders were over $1000..................
I keep watching the Jackson coins...to see if I can snag a deal. The Jackson seems to be the most popular design of the series! One day you may be telling your grandkids about the time you saw one sell for $1100. They'll be like..."Really Grandpa! Why didn't you buy it?!!!"
