1890-S Toned Morgan - what would you do?

Some may recall this Morgan from the thread below. We had plenty of people guess straight grades but the holder said cleaned. I didn't see any sign of cleaning so I gave it another try at PCGS and received the same result-Unc Details cleaned. A few dealers looked at it for me at a show and each had a different opinion-one thought there was something on the reverse while another thought there was something on the obverse.

I don't know how many times this coin has been tried for grading. All I know is that I bought it in a details holder and got a details grade when sending it myself (that could be the entire history or it might have made tons of trips). Would you try again? Maybe at a different grading company?

Another option is to just list it for sale (with disclosure of the details grade of course). I still like it, so there is also the possibility of putting it back in the box with its other Morgan friends.

Below are the Trueviews from each time:

Personally I do not appreciate the color or toning...to each their own...but I posted just the other day about a coin I sold to John Call MS 65 +* ...he did well on it...Again the color and the fact it even had a finger print in the toning. The details grade wouldn't deter my purchase as much as the dislike of it color. Again personal preference

Do you have an area you think they are seeing as cleaned?

When you did a show submission, did you crack and resubmit or did you go for reconsideration or submit it in the old holder in some way?

That's my issue-I don't. Two different dealers had different opinions-one thought there was a reverse wipe while the other claimed it was somewhere on the obverse. I see nothing obvious in either area. I actually owned a "net graded" common date MS 61 with decent color (not as nice as this coin) before that had obvious patch of hairlines on the obverse. This one might have something similar but it's not as clear.

Crack and sub raw (along with the rest). There usually is little reason to submit in the details holder as it is an unnecessary bias (unless it's something where downgrading from Unc Details to AU Details would be a big loss-which is not the case here).

I wouldn't try again. It's a pretty coin, but there must be something going on that triggers them to details grade it each time.

Of course if your luck is like mine, you'll sell it... and the next guy will get a straight grade on it... and a better TrueView!

PS- I like the top TrueView better. It makes the violet patch in right obverse field pop.

That's part of what makes me want to try again. This is an uncommon date for such color. If someone gets it into a straight graded holder, I believe it would be worth at least a few thousand. A person with a high end date set of toned Morgans asked me about this coin and mentioned it was likely one of the best in terms of color for the date that he had seen. So I could see there being plenty of interest. If I sell as-is, I might be able to break even (although I would hope to make a little and thus would start higher than what anyone would likely pay in a details holder).

Edit: and I recall when that happened with one of your world coins; I had a toned Morgan that was a 66 and someone got a 67, which tripled the final price (although that one I didn't even think to resubmit).

I know you prefer PCGS for the Trueview, but I would send it raw to NGC before I decided to move it along. Possibly even to ANACS, as a straight grade from them would still be better than a details grade from anywhere.

That's my current thinking. I like NGC too but the super slow grading had me hesitant to send anything there. I hear the wait times have greatly improved (compared to PCGS now being super slow) and I did opt to sign up for their recent offer ($150 credit for $100). I have another grading nemesis (a Franklin that I stubbornly sent to three grading services and got three different results) that can tag along. Now I just need to find a few more raw coins to make it a full submission.

That was my thought too. Then if you really want it at pcgs, once it's in a straight grade holder somewhere you could try a crossover. Maybe that might work better?

I’ve been very happy with the NGC Photovision pics they took of my ancients, FWIW. Not the same thing as a toned Morgan, but the photos have been exceptional. So yeah… maybe give that a try?

The main goal would be a straight graded holder. I'd be thrilled at that point. And you are correct that would open up the chance for a crossover if I wanted to try that.

As far as pictures, the TrueViews certainly help when posting a photo on a forum or trying to sell online. I already have these photos, so I'm not too worried about another photo. I have heard that the NGC photovision has improved (there were some complaints early on but I think NGC has listened and gotten better since that point).

I’d leave it be and be happy with it.

Definitely take one more shot at NGC. I just don’t see it as a details coin. I see no evidence of it. It has beautiful toning, and that is a date that rarely tones nicely. NGC is much faster than it was. If you crack it once more, you don’t lose a ton of money. I just do not see what PCGS is seeing, and since you have no consensus, go for one more shot.
