The region of Sumatra and the lower Malay Peninsula commonly used various tin ingots, perhaps most famously in the shape of a pyramid, including these tin clasp rods. The various tin ingots were common when Europeans arrived on the scene and most were generally attributed to the Colonial Period when other tin coinages issued by local sultanates and kingdoms were known. It wasn't until the early 2000's when a few dozen of these tin clasp rods were found in a shipwreck that has been accurately dated to the tenth century off the coast of Sumatra, proving that the tin ingots (more specifically, the tin clasp rods) were used as early as the tenth century, during the rule of the great Srivijaya Empire of Sumatra.
