Yes one was auctioned recently, (last two months) . I tried to find the Coin World article but I already gave it away. Sorry,
Here is a listing of known ones and a little history. http://www.coinlink.com/News/us-coins/unusual-items-1906-indian-cent-struck-in-gold/ Jim
Heritage auctioned one recently. here is the link http://coins.ha.com/common/view_item.php?Sale_No=1136&Lot_No=2433
Thank You Believe it or not I search Heritage's Archives and it pulled up nothing. Thanks, I'll look again. I think I have two.. my metal detector won't recognize them as a copper penny.
doubt you found two of them made of gold... what are the dates??? they made them out of copper-nickel from 1859-1864.
Like the link says one is a 1905 made on a 1/4 eagle planchet , most likely a inside job as gold planchetts were probablly watched carefully . http://coins.ha.com/common/view_item.php?Sale_No=1136&Lot_No=2433 rzage
As jumpingrat pointed out, Heritage auctioned one at Orlando FUN which was mistakenly made on a $2.5 gold planchet. It generated, shall we say... "considerable interest" $253,000 worth of interest, as a matter of fact.
I was wondering that myself. At the best, the "mistake" was caught in an audit when the gold came up one planchet short. There might have been a beatdown. :hammer:
a lotta beatdowns must be worth a quarter mill. lol. wonder why the mint isnt after this money while theyre after money from a 1933 st gaudens.
suspected indian head not copper here's a few pictures of the 1896 IHC I thought might be gold, I can't find the other one but still scanning them with the metal detector. This 1896 will not register as copper on my detector like all the others I have. it will jump from a 5 cent piece to a silver dime to a 25 Cent piece and will fluctuate in the Gold Area of the meter. You can't see it in these pictures but there is some spotting corrosion.
Ihc Funny you should say that, I was thinking the same.. I never really look to much at IHC's since I am mostly a lincoln penny collector but I looked close up at this one and it has a full liberty in the band which I understand means alot to some people. Although I did just get a bunch in a roll I bought on eBay the other day and here's a picture of a 1906 that was in it. This one not only has full liberty but also has all four diamonds in the lower ribbon.
Second Suspect-1903 IHC Here's some pictures of the other IHC that won't register copper on the metal detector. This one stays on the 5Cent/Pull Tab area for a beverage can on the indicator.
1903 ihc After I took the previous pictures I noticed a difference in the rim compared to a normal 1903 IHC and compared them and took pictures of each. The first Picture is a regular 1903 IHC and the second is the 1903 IHC that won't register as copper on the metal detector. There is an obvious difference when examined up close. The one that looks goldish has a lip all the way around the rim.
Take it to a local jeweler or pawn shop or coin store. they will tell you if its gold. But in all honesty I do see some color differential, but it doesnt look like gold to me. And I own a lot of gold. On top of that this IHC should be extremely heavy if its really made from gold. Also the corrosion doesnt seem proper if its gold. Just my two cents
Thanks for the advice and I'll get it checked out. Is there a hand-held device such as the one people use to check the authenticity of Diamonds but only to distinquish precious metals instead on the market? What do you make out of that lip on the odd Penny?.. it is not isolated, it continues all the way around the coin on both sides. Almost looks like a cap around the ridge. The dark areas on the second coin are not corrosion, it looks like dirt.. think I might clean it since gold doesn't corrode it should all ome off.
Read the Heritage auction record, posted above. The very first thing is says is "Weight: 64.5 grains, the standard weight of a quarter eagle." Have you weighed your coin ?
