Today I have quite a few Alexander III, "The Great", coins. This was my first - a lucky purchase with CNG provenance and an unpublished type - the wildwinds example of this variant of Price 1379 with Artemis under the chair and no "buckle" in left field. Here's what the "buckle" looks like:
    upload_2022-5-13_12-14-37.png
    upload_2022-5-13_12-28-45.png
Macedon, Alexander III (336-323 BC), AR Drachm, Nice VF Ex CNG Inventory 725215, (4.22 gm), Lampsakos mint, struck 323-317 BC.
Obv: Head of Herakles right, wearing lionskin headdress
Rev: AΛEΞANΔPOY, Zeus seated left, right leg drawn back, holding eagle and sceptre; Artemis left with torch beneath throne.
Ref: Price 1379 var (no symbol in left field). Unpublished variety without 'belt-buckle' symbol in left field. One other example that I know of, appears to be same reverse die and different obverse die.

A few of my favorite Alexander's are on display here: Parthian Beginnings.

    Next: a lucky purchase

I got this cool coin (first coin in the world to display the VOC monogram) in a group for $45. Amongst it were a Roman denarius, a gilded British trial penny/token, and some other goodies. I sold the denarius for $45 later at a coin show so this one is a freebie, in a way.

What's the story on this rad helmet here; what is it? I would've guessed a tower with spire first.

The reverse is what makes this type so popular, but the crested helmet with Pegasus on the obverse is pretty cool too:

Obv.: IMP CAES DOMITIANVS AVG P M, laureate head right.
Rev.: TR P COS VII DES VIII P P, tripod surmounted by a dolphin right. RICII# 74.
These early type portraits are my favourite and coupled with an interesting reverse, the tripod and dolphin, being symbols of Apollo.

too late - but fortunately also:

    Ref: RIC II.1 267 (Titus); RSC 390

Vesuvius erupted August 24, 79 AD. Pliny the Younger writes to historian Tacitus:

"We could hear women shrieking, children crying and men shouting. Some were calling for their parents, their children, or their wives, and trying to recognize them by their voices. Some people were so frightened of dying that they actually prayed for death. Many begged for the help of the gods, but even more imagined that there were no gods left and that the last eternal night had fallen on the world."
-Pliny the Younger, 2nd Letter to Tacitus

and I will add a modern scene of Vesuvius from Norwegian painter Johan Christian Dahl in 1824. He witnessed this eruption Christmas 1820 and made an oil sketch which became the basis for the painting given to the Prince of Denmark (future King Christian VIII).
