Just a bizarre coin. Painted with lacquer and apparently missing the last two letters in “cents”, part of “states” and most of the “A” in America. Grease Filled Die, possibly??? I’m giving it a soak in acetone to try and get rid of the coating. I’ve got basically nothing in this coin, so a little experimentation will be fun. I’ll post post-acetone photos once it sold for a bit. Any thoughts on the missing letters would be appreciated.
Post acetone images… Definitely thinking grease filled die. Looks like Large motto (o is only letter I can make out)
I was going to say a acetone bath would remove the lacquere. I used it on a heavy coated cent. Nice woodie too
Could be grease filled but the missing obv rim makes me wonder about the possibility of the die faces not being parallel.
