In silver coins.. what is your choice?

I wanted to start this topic in order to open a fun discussion.. as well as trade info.

Of the minted coinage (modern stuff.. not rounds) out there on the market today, what do you buy for stocking up your horde? ASE's? Maple or australian... austrian... chinese?

And why? Are some better than others on value down the road? Not talking slabs here.. just mint, UC coins.

So far... I've got about 25 ASE's 2010, 5 Aussie Kookaburra's, 5 koala's this month. Still new to this, and so do not have any maples, Austrian or chinese panda's. the chinese stuff is beautiful.. but coming from china, its value down the road tends to make me not want to pay the higher premiums for them over ASE's.

    Thoughts?

Nothing fancy just 90% coins, plain ol' circulated.

Cool. I've looked into that as well... although the lot sizes I've seen most places puts it out of my monthly buying budget ($1K a month). Provident metals does have $1 face value lots of mercury dimes for about $12.30 or so... that might be worth looking into!

question though... when you are ready to sell, how do you market them? Lots by face value? Dealers for spot price?

I"m a coin collector first so I get the bags and look threw them. Pull out some that are better then melt value and have some silver to boot.

Depending on what you got you can put low grade sets together and sell as a set or sell as bulk types say 2 rolls of merc's at a time.
Up to you and what you have left.

I feel the premiums are lower this way so you get more silver for the dollar plus some nicer coins to boot!

As for 1k per month you can go to your local pawn shop and tell them you want to buy the bulk silver that comes in in coin form. There is a good chance you can get it and at a good price plus it's less picked over before it goes to a numismatic area.

I do inlay work on guns & grips for a living (mainly high end 1911 work in the custom side of the industry)... and so have a LOT of scrap silver. Thats actually what got me into this. we own two business, and so this was another "fun" way to put some aside for the future. Its collecting, enjoying & saving all at the same time, so to speak. Silver and gold... usually a 1/10th coin a month, and the rest into silver coins.

I'll definitely go after some of these lots... sounds fun!

I buy coins to collect that I don't plan on selling anytime soon. But since you asked about silver investment coins for selling at a future time, I have ASE for that and a lot of half dollars. The advantage of buying pre-1964 half dollars is that they are easier to store, have over 1/3 ounce of silver a piece, and have lower premiums to silver dollars and other pre-1965 coins. I mostly get Franklin's but occasionally get Walkers as well. The mercury dimes you mentioned at $12.30 might be something to look into, as the melt value of $1 of mercury dimes at present is $11.80. This is considered a small premium in today's market.

Like Maple Leafs, they are .9999 instead of plain .999 :D

You can also go with Philharmonics, love the way they look.

90% is closer to spot and has a large market.

ASEs are best by test. Maple Leafs probably a close second. It is important to consider what will be easiest to sell under a wide variety of conditions, even if it costs slightly more.

Phills, Marps, ASE, libs, Brits and Kooks, in that order due to premium and shipping costs.

I do not like Pandas. Just don`t buy them.

When it comes to bullion investing, I can get ASE's for only a little over spot. But for pure looks, I enjoy silver pandas. Thats just me.

  15. I prefer the ASEs but have a number of other world bullion coins as well. TC

Personally I like the Canadian silver maples. The premium is lower, and they are guaranteed by a government. Philharmonics are nice too.

In American silver, 90% half dollars.

My local guy has 90% $500 face value bags for about $1350 (silver at 17.00 today when he priced them)... it was quite a bargain so thats what I am going to stock up on for awhile as funds become available.

I think you meant 40%ers. Least I hope you meant 40%ers or can give me his number. For 90% at less than 3 times face..I'd be happy to include a finders fee. :goof::eek::bigeyes:
