Was thinking about buying the above pictured coin, but am confused on it being a 1947 coin but a new die restrike, any information would be helpful the coin is about $3,500
I'd be reluctant to pay almost 1.5x face for a gold restrike, especially at that size. I'm pretty sure I had someone offer me one below melt at a show a few years back. Now, granted, gold was in the doldrums at that point, but still. They seem to go for a much lower premium on eBay... no, wait, those are MS64 to MS66. So, maybe worth the premium in MS70, if you can find a believer in the same thing when you're ready to sell it? The one I was offered was raw, and probably impaired.
I guess my question, what actually is a new die re strike ? havent really seen that particular terminology on a coin before as I usually buy raw examples vs graded ones.
A new die. - Just that. New dies created by the mint Restrike - New strike but same year as whenever. Not a current year. In this case 1947. This coin was made with dies that were recreated by the mint but instead of putting the current year on it, they put 1947. At least that's my 2c.
Looks like they take a price jump in MS-70 $3500 is not bad for PCGS plastic Cert # checks out on PCGS
Twelve years isn't really all that long ago! Now, I know he has been gone for quite a while, but you must have forgetten Clinker's article on the subject? Here is a refresher for you! In any case, if you can get a hold of Mexico City Mint reports from 2005/06, you might be able to get some more detailed or technical information on the subject. I believe the 1996 re-strikes were from re-engraved dies with a low mintage of 300. The 2005/06 re-strikes were from newly created dies, I believe. Unlike the 1996 re-strikes, I believe these ones have a heavy matte finish.
Gold, actually, but yeah, a new strike. Apparently 70s aren't nearly as prevalent for this issue as they are for ASEs or AGEs, though...?
I think the real question I am asking is the value between a re strike and an original ? I guess it would be good luck finding one of those…LOL
I honestly do not think you would be able to tell the difference between an original 1947 and one of the early re-strikes that were done starting in 1949. I would assume that high grade originals would be extremely hard to find (given you could even differentiate between an original and an early re-strike). You would be able to tell the difference from the 1996 re-strikes as the re-engraving should be evident. Since there were so few of the 1996 re-strikes, I would assume that one would be quite pricey if one ever becomes available on the market. As far as value between original and re-strikes, given equal preservation, I would believe that an original would be more valuable. However, it would need a rather solid provenance to give any proof of it to being an original.
