Hello I have a 1912 newfoundland nickel with a hole.would be perfect for your hat.its yours if you want it.
Great to see it back, nice coins on it too. Didn't you once say it didn't fit your head as well as it did back then?
No, but in the past I only did pre-1900. Nope. Just a Dobbs box I got from an antique store. My late mother was Lillian Dobbs, so I had to honor the (step-) family name. The hat is modern, (2004) from a wedding tux supply place. I did. It was rather famous back in the day. Last show I went to was in January of ‘08. Last national show was Charlotte ANA in ‘07. A cropped headshot of me tipping that hat (full pic seen above) was my avatar for eons.
I like it. I bet you stick out like a sore thumb at coin shows with such an eccentric piece of headwear.
That is an understatement. In most of my “real” life outside the forums, I’m an introvert. The holey coin getup was a way to have fun and my one time to be flamboyant. It was an eye-opening experience.
@Evan Saltis - if you’re game, I need your genealogical research skills to find out more about CLARENCE E. LAKE / MECCA / OHIO / BORN FEB. / FIFTY FOUR. That’s pretty apparently eighteen fifty-four. The host coin is one of these.
I 'm am honored to have a former specimen of mine on Rob's hat....not only that but it also has a write up in Error Scope Magazine! have you seen it?
He is referring to the small Spanish-American War token that has a picture of the Battleship Maine on it. It is barely recognizable in the photos above as a small dime-sized bronze piece with a clipped planchet. Alas, I have not yet photographed it individually, and have put the hat back away.
Some pieces (Dansco 7070 types, mostly) remain on my cork board. The Indian cent is an 1864-L. I have an Indian cent date set on another cork board. The hat will be miscellaneous World, Medieval, and Ancient stuff.
