What do you guys think? Quarters (age/krugs/ general bullion 1/4's) or sovereigns as far as gold goes. Besides the obvious fact that the quarters are a quarter (and only marginally more from my dealer) and the sov's are .2354. What say you? Also, besides the fact that there are a bunch of sovereign threads and I may throw this same post on kitco for the hell of exposure.

What ultimately would be the better long term hold.

    thx!

Valid point, guess that's the silver bleeding over.

Despite the "claimed or substantiated fakes" and gold content that is clearly more in one than the other. What do you all say?

  7. I would choose the AGEs over the others due to design, recognizability, guarantee of weight/purity, etc. TC

If you can get a sovereign for the same price as a 1/4 ounce coin, I would go for the sovereign, as they usually command a significantly higher premium. If you just want a lump of gold, you're probably best off buying kruggerands, or American bullion coins if they impart some kind of tax advantage (as British coins do over here in the UK)...

Sovereigns are probably second only to the Krugerrand in terms of global recognisability, maybe not in America, but elsewhere, and especially in the Middle East, Mediterannian and British Commonwealth areas.

Edit: Assuming the OP is an American, you are probably better of buying American gold, as they are probably the most widely recognised in your locality. Kruggerands are probably available for the lowest premiums over gold content though, if the situation is similar to that of the UK (Britannias are more exensive than Krugs despite being shipped from overseas for some reason), so they're an option you should probably consider...

I would disagree with that. There are fewer AGE 1/4's around than sovereigns. The premium for sovereigns is on the buy side, not the sell side. No guarantees, but I think the AGE is the better long term holding due to the relative scarcity compared to sovereigns and krugerands.

In late Nov.- early Dec. my gut feeling was for Kruggerands. For some odd reason I just had one of those "unfounded" feelings that Kruggerand production would cease or be interrupted in the near future.

Some of my gut feelings are completely off the wall and never do happen, others do. Anyways, I was going to buy bullion anyways, the feeling just helped me make up my mind. I ended up with 52-1/10th Krugs (2009). I am tickeled to have them regardless of what happens in the future.

I vote for 1/4 or any fractional on the AGE's.

I also like Krugs for another reason.

and.. copy from post...........[ If you can get a sovereign for the same price as a 1/4 ounce coin, I would go for the sovereign, as they usually command a significantly higher premium. I am in the US and this is pretty much completely not the case and untrue here ( a sov at the same price as a 1/4...never happening here) I picked up several sov's the other week at 270 and quarters were around 305, across the 6-7 dealers i shop and buy with. I bought the sov's simply b/c I didn't have any and these QEII were in practically unc shape. Really very pretty. Sov's here are ALWAYS less than quarters unless numi (obviously for the US, Sov's are simply less gold as is) The one's I bought were late 70 qeII.

My overall concern is the ability to unload or recoup if I needed to sell. I'm a long term holder/stacker and am of the mindset that not everyone can afford and "oz" but are able to afford a 1/10 or a quarter or a .2354 coin if i needed to sell and wasn't at a coin dealer. I'm rather fortunate being here in a state that doesn't care about buying or selling gold...in the least.

    thx for the info everyone!
