Though, I love Doug, thought it was an out of character exaggeration as well. And I've never seen any top "insert arbitrary number here" thread rules of etiquette. To be fair here if one goes back to the original thread that kickstarted this tradition there is not so much “a protocol” but there was a challenge of sorts. The challenge was that folks would post their favorite coins but more importantly they were invited to give a hint as to why the coins they chose were favorites. Doug in his own words in that original thread says that lists of 1, 5 or 50 are all just as legitimate for inclusion in the original challenge. There was never anything magical about 10 and from early on there were multiple lists (such as budget and specialty). Knowing that I will go out on a limb here and say it is pretty clear that Doug’s comments were not directed disparagingly at Donna’s lists which always include relative ranking and commentary. I think the idea is that not considering and explaining why you like some coins best is a deviation from the original tradition. To be clear I like the posts of coin purchases with or without commentary or ranking. I love seeing everyone’s coin purchases for the year. There have been some year end threads with virtual trays, multiple collages and all kind of fun stuff outside of the norm. Love it! However, I do enjoy lists ranked by favorite the most. I think there is a lot to be learned by that exercise. I also always like it when people add a bit of “why it’s a favorite” info because I always learn something there too. In any case I enjoy Top 10 time no matter what form it takes... let’s please not get to bickering about it folks... it’s almost Saturnalia after all.
My goodness apologies for starting this thread!... ..I didn't mean to start a rift between people, I was purely asking what the general acceptance was?.....Obviously there's none, which is cool!...It's actually made me feel reluctant to post my top 10 now....Maybe just let this thread slip off the 1st page and allow a much more interesting coin/story fill it's spot!....Paul
