    Anyone ever thy this..
I found a way to get more free computer and electronic stuff then I could handle. .. All free.. Just time to drive around and pick up..
Well Electronics are COVERED in Metals..
I would break the stuff down and ship to a guy in Montana to refine.. I think he did pretty good.. And I made some good $$ too.. I know it is DANGEROUS!! But am thinking about trying the refining part myself..
DANGEROUS!! I know those poor kids in India are melting the stuff down and dying.. I have also seen stories about some poor guy killing himself in a garage while trying this..
I wanted to know if anyone has ever done this.. is it hard.. YOU KNOW your Tempted!!!

The Harddrive discs are coated in Platinum ..
The Electronic Boards are Covered in Gold..
The CPU's (Larger ones ) have 1/10th oz of Gold EACH!!

I wouldn't advise anyone try refining in a residence or without proper knowledge, equipment, fire protection, ventilation, respiratory protection, skin protection, insurance... you get the point... e-waste is dangerous without the proper precautions! Even storage may have it's hazards. It's far safer to find a company that will pay you for the waste you bring in to have them refine just like an old fashioned scrap yard or metal recycling facility takes in copper, aluminum, etc.

Collecting aluminum cans is safer, easier and may be more profitable by volume over time for the do-it-yourselfer. :thumb:

I'll stick to roll searching. Melting computers is too hard core for even me.

Someone here posted a youtube video on the refining process. I suggest you watch it. Not to learn how it is done, but to see how complicated it really is, and to look at all the special equipment that they use to do it. Better off sending to that guy in Montana, if he's willing to offer you something that you essentially got for nothing. One question though.....what mailing service do you use? I know the U.S. post office always asks, "is there anything liquid, dangerous, blah, blah, blah....in this package? I'm just wondering if you say, "well, if it catches fire, someone might die?" LOL.

I am not doing this anymore.. I was talking to another guy here in town who is doing it and selling items on Ebay that he is getting from the Dump.. 800.00 Last week..
I like the Idea of an extra 800 for Coins..
I just wanted to know if anyone else ever did this.. with any luck..
As for shipping.. I would Send off Smaller Flat rate Boxes but when I would get about 200lbs.. He would come down and pick up.. Nice!

Doing a little research, CPUs and circuit boards from high end systems contain from 8 to 11 troy ounces of recoverable gold per each 2,000 pounds. The platinum on the drives is generally considered uneconomic to recover.

    I am currently doing it.
    Its very dangerous and hard.
I recomend a gas mask, full body suit, and a wash down shower area for before and after. Also a building seperate froma residence is recomended since the stench is wretched.
Also dont melt the pcb boards, it releases all the chemicals into the air your breathing and gets into your skin.
I am using the military chemical warfare unit which comes with the suit goggles and thick body suit. its about 1/4 of an inch thick.
Regardless I havent found a buyer for the cpu boards so I had to recover it myself.
However I have had about 5 digits worth of profits so far since we talked.
on another note the platinum is a beeyotch you have to grind it off so its like platinum flakes. its still platinum just fing hard to do anything with it. too time consuming and not enough to produce it. plus you have to recondense it....
Also since the price dip many ppl hav left this industry thankfully and its much easier to pick up on now.

Hope that helps let me know if you ahve anything specific and ill tell you what I know.

hiho off to work we go

I do component level repairs on electronic circuit boards from time to time and that involves breathing some lead/tin/flux as I solder and desolder. As bad as lead is the circuit boards are made from epoxy resins and the gases they release when melted are very toxic.

The big question is what is your health worth? Because once it's gone it's either impossible or very expensive to get back.

    :loud: Be careful out there!

  12. I agree. I have taken apart a computer and put it back together and roll-search is much more fun (and safer). TC

Kinda sorry I brought it up, I DON'T want anyone to try this.. Just wanted to hear from anyone who had done it before with any luck..

    VERY DANGEROUS!

I am glad that ALL the members here are worried for the others who would be foolish enough to try this without the SKILLS NEEDED..
    Cheers all!!!
