Since all of these coins are going off under the PCGS Secure Plus tier, they will all receive TrueView images, which I look forward to seeing.

They were all received at PCGS on October 14, 2021.

    Submission 241240, Order 22438045, 1 Item

This one had to go on a separate invoice since it's a hammered coin.

    Line 1:

Scotland: silver penny of Alexander III, second coinage, ca. 1280-1286
    [IMG]
    What I'm hoping for:
any straight grade of VF20 or higher.
I do expect it should grade higher than 20, though I don't know if it will go XF. In the past I have gotten a fair number of XF-AU grades on the hammered silver coins I sent in to PCGS. Thus far I've done OK on not getting many "Details" problem notations, except with hammered gold. In that category, I've taken some hard knocks. (You might say I’ve repeatedly gotten hammered on hammered gold.) I eventually did get
one piece of hammered gold that came back with a problem-free straight-grade.

    Submission 241244, Order 22438026, 4 Items

    Line 1:

Great Britain: silver Trade dollar, 1899-B
    57507D3F-E33D-4F19-9CE5-7AB95F2C2774.png 3AAA7A8B-A77C-492B-A683-F1FD26CEA4DA.png
What I'm hoping for: any Genuine "details" grade.
Frankly, I would be astonished if this coin straight-graded. It is pretty obviously cleaned. As long as it's not counterfeit, I should do OK on this one, as they're a very popular type, and I don't have terribly much invested in it. But since they're also very popular with Chinese counterfeiters, I figured this piece deserved to ride along with my PCGS submission to resolve the question of authenticity. Two dealer friends have looked at it and said it looks real enough to them, and I concur- I think it probably is real. But the cleaning makes it hard to say for sure. So off it goes for certification.

The remainder of the submission in Lines 2-4 are items that are each worth barely as much as the eventual cost of slabbing them, but they're all pieces I wanted to add to my collection, which is all slabbed. I had some PCGS vouchers I needed to use up, anyway.

    Line 2:
Germany (Thale am Harz in Saxony): aluminum 2-mark notgeld token (cat & crown), 1921
    [IMG]
What I'm hoping for: any straight MS-grade.
Somebody on the forums posted one of these a while back, which was the first time I'd ever seen the design. I knew I had to find one. You've gotta love that cat on there, playing with a crown, even if it has a face like Otto von Bismarck! It was not terribly expensive (25 EUR; $38.27 USD after international shipping.) The German dealer called this piece a Fast Stempelglanz (Choice UNC). I concur that it's UNC, though I don't know what Sheldon Scale grade it will receive from PCGS.

    Line 3:
    Latvia: silver 5-lati, 1929
    [IMG]
What I'm hoping for: any straight MS-grade.
This is a lovely design I've always admired, and it's a beautiful crown-sized coin. I do think it is Uncirculated and purchased it as such, though I don't think it's quite Gem quality (MS65+). Something in the MS62-63 range would satisfy me. I plucked this one out of my own swap/sell/giveaway inventory and figured if it ended up in a PCGS MS holder, I'd keep it for my own collection.

    Line 4:
    Panama: silver Balboa, 1947
    [IMG]
What I'm hoping for: any straight MS-grade.

This is another appealing crown/dollar-sized coin, and a popular type. I think it is a generic quality UNC and bought it as such. I have another Balboa (a 1934) which is almost as nice, but perhaps not MS- I think that one is an AU coin. Something in the MS62-64 range on this one would satisfy me. Like the Latvian coin above, I plucked this one out of my own swap/sell/giveaway inventory and decided to include it in my personal collection if it comes back with a straight MS-grade.

LordM. Hope you're successful in your stated aims. But I'm suspecting the Trade Dollar is not genuine. And, oh yes, I really like the Scottish penny. I've been trying to get a decent one of those for a while.

Look forward to hearing the eventual results.

The Panama and Latvia coins used to not make sense to grade, but with the recent market upswings those have gone up too. If the Balboa goes at least 63 and the Latvia at least 62 (which I think both can), then you will cover the grading fees (both should be worth at least $30-$50 over the raw cost at that point).

I like the cat too-and the face gives it more character. :D

Thanks. I reckon we’ll find out, before too long. That element of doubt on the Trade dollar is of course why I sent it in.

What specific attribute(s) to it make it seem “off” to you?

Other than the fact that any Trade dollar- US or British- should be looked at carefully since the Chinese workshops like to fake them so much.

The details do look a tad mushy, but my take on that is that it could have that appearance merely because of the polishing. (?)

I honestly don’t know, and look forward to finding out.

Edit: I’m not so sure about those denticles, though. Hmmm…

Good luck Rob. I don't know squat about foreign coins so I have nothing to offer other than crossed fingers for you.

I don’t have any slabbed coins. But if that is your thing I hope you receive the grades you are hoping for.

It is my thing. Twenty years on the PCGS forums left their mark on me, so I absorbed much of that culture. For better and for worse. There’s elements of both about it.

When I mentioned my suspicion about the authenticity of the trade dollar, it was because I had first felt hesitant about the varying shape of the denticles. The rest is just an overall feeling about the appearance of the coin ... which seems to accelerate once suspicions are raised. But keep in mind that I really have not examined that many trade dollars, and only have about a dozen in my collection, so I am far, far from being an expert.

That’s eleven more than I have, and ten more than I’ve owned, total. Totally valid impression. I have no idea, personally, and couldn’t ethically sell the coin without a disclaimer thus, due to that lingering doubt. I’m sure PCGS has seen a great many more Brit Trade dollars than either of us, though, so I reckon we’ll have a definitive answer in a few weeks. Win or lose, the outcome will be interesting to see.

Good luck Rob. I love the Scotland hammered penny. How is the turnaround for foreign coins compared to US?

I have two of your coins and in similar MS/MS+ grades...Line 3 and Line 4...if slightly different dates, so especially appreciate them. Just wondering, do you have any update from PCGS on an estimated time they expect these to take...?

Almost universally slower, I would guess, though it’s been so long since I made a US submission, I don’t fully recall.
