Unbelievable Find! I saw the auction pictures and they all look like run of the mill coins and you came up with those, including the 1909-S VDB - $1500 right there!

 

I collect Buffalo Nickels. I look for "bargains" on auction sites to resell. It supplements my retirement funds.

Coin collecting for kids used to be going through endless piles of change to find rare dates and mint marks. Now that this is a fruitless task this is the substitute I guess but you don’t really hear about finds like this even though these lots are supposedly “unsearched.” I can only imagine your feeling on finding this coin. I no longer collect Lincoln cents but I did as a kid and what I wouldn’t have done for one of these - even now looking at one is thrilling! What a find!

Super find! AU58 = $1225 Grey Sheet price, so obviously should sell above that retail. There were several Dixon's Auctions on Proxibid (that "Dixon Auctions" was based out of Glen Allen, Virginia) where a huge amount of slabbed 1909-S VDBs, 1914-D, 1922 No-D, 1909-S, 1931-S, and 1909 VDBs (slabs were PCGS, NGC, ANACs, and ICG) were auctioned within the last 2 months. I don't think that Dixon is affiliated with the Dixon Auctions in MD that sold you those Lincolns ... just coincidence, I guess. I love Hi-Bid (and Dixon’s). I won a bazillion wheat pennies one time, and I’ve come close but never had that kind of score. Then again, half-a-bazillion of my wheat pennies were scattered on the floor at some USPS station somewhere between Montana and Florida, and all I got was a stupid note that said my package(s) had been damaged… so maybe it was in there somewhere.

I received several boxes of bagged coins. Several were re-packaged and re-boxed by USPS. I got some good stuff, but I always wonder what may have gotten away when USPS tossed and dropped/broke at least 3 of the boxes without realizing they were quite heavy; then, swept up their mess and threw everything in new bags and boxes… noting only that the delivery had been damaged.

 

I don't know. That hibid place seems to pull in pretty good offers there from what I saw. There shipping fees are insane too. ??? IJDK.

Congrats on the find! I actually just found this in my grandpas old belongings. Is this worth anything like yours?

 

Believe It or not this stuff does happen!! My husband and I had been searching rolls for only a short period to help his dad finish his collection. We would buy unsearched lots and rolls off of ebay(laughs) and of course we all know that these rolls are not unsearched. So a lot came up of a powerseller that just threw massive amounts of items up at the same time that looked like more a liquidation seller. Needless to say there were 2 big lots seemed like the one ended up costing about 113.00. So after receiving it ( the coin rolls just tossed into a medium size flat rate and beat to all heck) we began to go through the rolls most of which were marked with year. We got to a old time plastic tube with the lid and those are really skinny and tight. My husband shook it , laid it on its side , beat it , you name it and those pennies did not want to come out of that tube that was marked 1939. You can imagine the rest. He said that is 1909 S. I turned it over and really having to look because it was unaltered, I said that is a VDB! A 1909 S VDB at 11 pm at night. Of course he had to call his dad and in the morning his dad thought he was dreaming about that phone call from us. After having our coin dealer check it sure enough- it was exactly that!! Pretty good find and when old collectors pass on many younger people don't know what is valuable and what is not our just wont go through misc. boxes like that. Only us coin nuts would dump that box and look at each individual coin Congrats on that find. Spectacular and exciting! Very nice that these coins come into the hands of collectors that truly appreciate the coin for history and value it holds.
