Can someone tell me what caused this? I hope the pics come out ok. It looks like a fine layer of silver is missing and has like a copperish color on the surface instead.
Looks like tarnish or something was spilled on the coin. Maybe someone touched it with their finger??
I was wondering if that might be it. I was following a few threads about tarnishing, but couldn't find any pics to compare it to. I just recently started collecting eASE's some I'm trying to get up to speed. Does the tarnish affect the grade of the coin?
The dreaded milk spots can kinda look that color but not usually that shape from what I've seen. I'm not sure but I'm still new at all this stuff.
Stop messing with my head.. I need coffee. Its too Early. Don't look for Tarnish in old Threads.. Look for Toned.. Have FUN reading! I have a few ASE that have started to tone.. even in the Tubes One in a Slab.. Such is life of a coin. I love it.. other don't.. as for Now if tone can cont. and gets the "Right" Colors/Style it will sell for a Premium.. There are 1000 post on the issue.. Have fun! Let it continue to tone.. it may be nice... I bet someone touched it.. Maybe just a sneeze? The Brownish color may get red? .. Purple?
I agree, it looks like someone spilled on it or touched it. It does not look like a milk spot at all to me. I have a few SEs that have started to tone, but more on the edges and not the surface. TC
I agree, I have one that looks like it was in a Paper Roll at one time.. The edges ONLY have Purple.. Can't wait to see what happens to it.. In 100 years.. LOL
It is normal silver toning, most likely from the air. For some reason, some years, the ASE seem more reactive lately. I noticed last week that 2, 2009 ASE, had the same color tone as yours near the opening to the 2x2 flip ( all plastic type), so I just rotated them a little to even it up. For me they are just bullion so it is just for the color
That's the way the fingers look. Here, see for yourself. http://uscoinstoday.com/wp-content/...merican-Eagle-Silver-Bullion-Coin-Obverse.jpg
Yeah, it must be the camera angle. You made me pull out several other eagles and did make me notice that on some her fingers are kind of chubby and rounded. On this one (and several others) her fingers seems to be a little skinnier, sharper and pointy. I guess it must be the strike. On the "chubby" fingers, her other other hand is not as clear, and on her left foot the toes to seem meld into each other. On the sharper fingers, you can see more detail on the other hand as well as another toe behind the front one. P.S. LMAO mcarney1173!
