    The waiting is over:woot:
Normally I would wait to talk up a book that I've been waiting to be released until after reading. However, this is Mary Beard so we KNOW it's gonna be fun.
Word to the wise, it just dropped today:nailbiting::wideyed:

Here are some of my favorite coins from my 12 Caesar's set.
Though I've a couple Caesar portraits this is still my favorite of his coins:

Julius Caesar 49-48 BCE AR denarius (18 mm, 3.43 g, 2 h). Military mint traveling with Caesar. CAESAR in exergue, elephant advancing right, trampling on horned serpent / Simpulum, sprinkler, axe (surmounted by a dog's head), and priest's hat. Crawford 443/1; HCRI 9; Sydenham 1006; RSC 49. Banker's mark on obverse, porous. Near fine. From the Expatriate Collection.
    From the Expatriate Collection.

My trib penny had always been a source of pride. Not so much for its beauty, but rather that I looked, took my time and snagged it for a very affordable price:

    Tiberius
AD 14-37 CE. AR Denarius minted at Lugdunum. Laureate head right of Tiberius. Reverse: Female figure (Livia?) seated right. RIC 26; BMC 34. Appealing portrait; Choice Very Fine.
The "Tribute Penny" of Biblical fame.

Gotta love the scar across the soldiers cheek and lovely blue toning:

Looks like an interesting book, so I preordered the hardcover despite the mountain of books already next to my bed. :)

One thing though is I'm not sure why she narrated her audiobook herself. I tried listening to the audio sample and couldn't take it. Even for my audio book I had a professional narrate it...

Well, now, thank you sir. I still haven't spent last month's Audible credit, let alone the new one that's about to arrive. Wasn't sure what I was in the mood for. You might have just made my mind up for me.

PPS- I actually haven't read Mary Beard's books before, but I've seen her on video somewhere, and picked up enough snippets and excerpts to know I would like to.

Now, is her book about 12 emperors or about THE 12 Caesars, like Suetonius?

I'm not coming along too well with my 12 Caesars collection ...

I will buy the book, and maybe start it on my commute home. Thanks again.

As to my Twelve Geezers, here they are. (Or were, since this collection went away by about 2014, once I had transitioned to The Eclectic Box.

I look at this collection now, and while I do still feel the pride of having completed the 12C, I'd definitely do it differently today. I'm not referring to the ever-controversial sl*b issue, but just the overall quality and eye appeal standards. And photo quality.

Maybe I'd go for more interesting types instead of just the ol' "someone standing there" reverses, too. In fact, I've thought about having another go at it. If I did, I could make the new 12C set a subset of the Eclectic Box, the same way I now have three of the five coins I need for my US 1965 SMS (birthyear) subcollection.

    I’m well into Chapter 1 now! :)

Of course this will send me over the brink into doing another 12C collection, for which I shall have to curse and applaud @Ryro and Mary Beard both, for being such dangerous influencers. ;)

Since I haven’t read Mary Beard until this morning, tell me about the rationale behind this “SPQR 14” list, like why Augustus isn’t there but the Antonines are?

Hehe. If you enjoy this, you will LOVE SPQR! I am really enjoying her narration. In SPQR the hired Phylida Nash, whom has a great voice, but lacks the passion we are getting from the 12.

Dang inflation! LOL, OK. I like Lucius Verus. Cool beard.

PS- I like that Hadrian Aegyptos. Funny how many coins I see and like end that up being Hadrians. I think if I had to focus a collection on a single emperor (that'll never happen- we're talking hypothetically, here ;)), then I reckon Hadrian would be the man.
