Good morning fam. I am having like zero luck trying to ID this coin. I was wondering if anyone was able to provide any assistance. Thanks!
Thanks David, I see some similarities. I looked on acsearch.info and couldn't find one with the lion facing right. I also looked at romancoin.info to see if there were any databases, but wasn't able to find any . Any other ideas on how to find out if this is correct?
You would have to look up RIC or another standard reference, but I have no doubt it is Leo. You could also ask @Brian Bucklan since those are his.
It isn't from Palmyra. By pure coincidence I was looking at dozens of images in various books and pdfs of coins of Palmyra all day yesterday. As for Leo - there are many variations of Leo's name on coins, one as short as LEON VG. However, there are new variations cropping up all the time, although no Leo/lion coins have a legend on the reverse, which your coin appears to have. The lion is very peculiar - the tail is coming out of it's side but it does seem to be looking back and there is what could be a large cross above. (as RIC 671, Brit. Mus. 1995,0201.105 but no image online and with longer obv. legend). Having written that, yours also appears to have a legend around it, with MS (or other letter with a rounded top) at the lower right. And RIC gives no Leo / lion coins at all with a mintmark ending in MS.
Thank you! I have messaged RIC to see if they can provide any input. I wonder if it's the first specimen?
I was looking at the Vineyard Collection this morning. This looks a lot like the Dionysios panthers. Any thoughts on that??
Hey @Ryan McVay - I couldn't find a similar one on acsearch using "Dionysios panther" - Do you have a link to the one in the Vineyard Collection?
I'll have to recall where I saw that collection. I think that collection was just sold on one of the Bidr auctions. Either last week or a few weeks back.
