It is in fact quite literally a rainy day here at the moment. Here's a casual little sideline I started, and yet have a ways to go on. I just realized I did not do squares for the three varieties of 1864, but oh well. I was trying to fit it all as symmetrically as possible into that grid. I'll probably retool it later. If any of my fellow eccentrics wants to do this, I will be happy to email you the file for that backpaper. Then all you will need is a cork board, some map pins, and some holey coins! I'm also gonna do a holey 19th century type set. I did holey large cents and Bust halves in the past. And Seated/Barber dime love tokens. And as always, I have a freestyle collection of holey Ancient, Medieval, Colonial, and (older) World coins going on as well.
I said this was a "casual" collection, but once I got the grid made for the cork board, I became a bit more driven. I bought several pieces this morning on eBay. Some tougher material. This 1864-L would have been a $220-ish coin without the hole. I'm into it for $77.94 total. This 1867 would likely have also been almost a nearly $200-ish coin in this grade without the hole. I'm into it for $79.00 total. The 1868 is also a somewhat tougher date. I'm into this one for $22.94 total. The 1871 trends $186 in F12 per Numismedia (unholed). I think this one is fairly close to that grade, though it's hard to see in this seller image. I'm into it for $65.65 total. I'll be removing it from that dusty 2x2 and giving it a gentle Vaseline rub when I get it.
I would not be at all surprised to learn that @HoledandCreative likely has the 1877, 1908-S, and 1909-S. @panzerman - look! I mount some of my coins as though they were rare butterflies!
I have always marched to the beat of my own drummer, along the Road Less Taken. I embrace the title of "Eccentric".
Happy to see some progress with your holey collection. Could you forward me that template? I need to make one for my half dimes
Absolutely. In fact, I can make you one for half dimes if you want. Just tell me what parameters you'll be collecting them under (One-a-year? Surely you don't want to go the whole date-and-mint thing. I know you're young, but that could still take a couple of lifetimes!) Half dimes should fit into smaller grid squares, too, so you can fit more onto an 8-1/2" x 11" sheet of card stock. Send me your email address via our PM conversation. BTW, the holey 1849 dime is probably halfway across the country to you by now.
You're gonna have a tough time with the 1846 half dime. 27,000 struck at Philly only. Hard to find, let alone finding one with a contemporary hole in it. Here ya go. I can email you the file later. This is of course just a screenshot. I can remove the quotation marks and change "Holey" to "Holed", if you prefer. Or do any other little tweaks you want.
Thanks so much. Yep I will probably have a tough time with the 1846 half dime. Last month I was looking at some eBay listings and there was an 1856 half dime. The picture really looked like it was a 1846 so I bought it for 10 bucks. As you’d expect though, it was an 1856 Still not a bad coin though.
Probably, given the sort of antics I get up to. Below: Exhibits A & B, indicating past eccentric behavior. The "Holey Coin Vest" and "Holey Gold Hat". (All but one of the coins were sold off in my 2013 Great Purge, but the costume itself remains in the closet and may get a second life one day.)
At this point, I'm imagining a vest bedecked with a full set of holey Indians. That would be super cool.
In the olden days when that photo was taken, circa 2004, the back side of the vest (not seen above) was a nearly-complete date set (one-a-year, not varieties) of holey large cents, lacking only the 1793, 1795, 1799, and 1804. I needed the large cent set on the back of the vest to balance out the weight of all the coins on the front (which were an assortment of pre-1900 World and US coins). The whole getup weighed several pounds, like a shirt of chain mail. But since the weight was well distributed, it was not at all uncomfortable to wear to shows. It did jingle when I moved.
Holey Moses! That hat is legendary! How you don't succumb to the temptation to wear it every day is beyond me. Do you have a rotating cast of coins for the hat or do you keep it original and stick with whats workin?
Long, long belated reply (more than a year late!): hey, that is a really sweet holey 1853 quarter! The hole position isn't perfect, but wow, what a sharp coin! Equally belated reply to @Mad Stax, who hasn't been around since late 2021 (miss you man, hope you return): I do have kind of a rotating cast of coins for the hat. I give some away, sell 'em, swap 'em, whatever. Some stay.
