  5. As I said in an earlier post: The Police are calloused when it comes to home robberies. They only seem to get excited over shootings. As I said before, if you have independent means, hire a reputable Private Investigation firm as soon as possible before the crime scene becomes contaminated.

what is it about these threads tha they seem to bring out the craziness in posters. This guy was victemized and robbed and the industry is rife with just this sort of events. He doesn't need prayers, or politicing, or blaming the victem. What he needs, and what we all need, is a concerted effort to stamp out stolen goods in the coin collecting market and better law enforcement.

Your focus is not on the root cause. What we need is to get all people to believe they should not take what does not belong to them.

right after we stop the illegal trade in stolen coins, which is actually an obtainable goal.

    https://www.nytimes.com/2014/08/12/upshot/heres-why-stealing-cars-went-out-of-fashion.html

Auto theft isn’t much of a problem anymore in New York City. In 1990, the city had 147,000 reported auto thefts, one for every 50 residents; last year, there were just 7,400, or one per 1,100. That’s a 96 percent drop in the rate of car theft.

So, why did this happen? All crime has fallen, nationally and especially in New York. But there has also been a big shift in the economics of auto theft: Stealing cars is harder than it used to be, less lucrative and more likely to land you in jail. As such, people have found other things to do.

It's not possible to police every coin. It would be stupid to even try.

Yup but today my collection is bigger and better than it was. I just don’t have my father’s coins.

As noted, the NUMISMATIC CRIMES INFORMATION CENTER https://numismaticcrimes.org/report-form/
is the long-established clearinghouse for this, going back the 1980s.

(I added the s to https: secure socket. http is not secure.

A lot of people do it. Some collectors enjoy it as part of the hobby experience. I will say from flying for instance that private pilots spend as much time or more planning the flight as flying. The same sense applies to astronomy. You don't just run outside and look around with your telescope. And just like pilots, many amateur astronomers keep log books. There are several competing software systems for numismatic inventory, usually supported with buy-sell and market data as well as the images. Other people just use Excel for the same results.

As noted @cplradar , not everyone finds it fun and interesting. It is part of the work of the hobby. Cash in Your Coins by Beth Deisher points out that without an accurate inventory, your heirs will have no idea what they inherited. Reviewed here:

And of course you will need a complete inventory for insurance. As noted in this thread Hugh Wood is the usual vendor. They are partnered with the ANA:

that has nothing to do with security and you shouldn't add it unless it is required for cryptography. http is completely secure...

not really. Ask an insurance adjuster. A few people might do it. It is an enormous amount of tedious work and software doesn't make it easier. And it requires taking pictures of the coins, scans of the receipts, and entering it into the ledgers with the dates of purchases and sales. Institutions do it because we have staff that are paid. And then the cops will still ignore you and there will be nobody to give the data to to track the coins. .. so there is that.

BTW - we had it all in a spreadsheet with images and receipts. It helped not at all

FWIW, we don't use Excel. We use OpenOffice, which is faster, more secure, and Free. https://www.libreoffice.org/
