Remember @Mat's "Your 2021 Collecting Goals" thread? How are y'all coming in pursuit of your goals? My goals vs. what happened: To continue to buy whatever I feel is interesting. However, what I find interesting at the moment seems to fall into certain subcollections/themes: Goal -- Continue to acquire coins of Faustina I and II that are not yet represented in my collection (I still have a fair number of bronze coins to acquire). What happened Success!!! I sure acquired a lot of Faustina coins. Here's just one, for example. Ain't she purdy? Goal -- Continue to acquire coins of Trebonianus Gallus and Volusian that are not yet represented in my collection. What happened I added some half a dozen coins to this subcollection. Here's one I haven't posted before. Goal -- Pick up the Gallienus zoo coins that are still missing in my collection What happened Goal -- Continue to seek out provincial coins with interesting reverse types, particularly if they illustrate Greco-Roman mythology, animals, or athletic competitions. What happened Obtained some cool provincials, from obscure cities, too. And what's cooler than Artemis driving a biga of stags? Goal -- Acquire some imperial issues of Nero, Balbinus, Pupienus or Pescennius Niger if they have good eye appeal and are reasonably priced. Not looking for choice EF; F-VF will do if they have nice surfaces and legible inscriptions. What happened
My post from that topic " My goal would be to add 1st and 2nd century RIC. I find these the most interesting ones (for me). Especially adding some emperors I don't have - such as Domitian (had to settle with one provincial for now). And stop impulse buying. I managed not to overpay anything in 2020, I think, but it appears I have problems in stopping, in terms of quantity. When I see an auction, I choose this and this and this and this ... yes, and this too. When I receive the invoice, even if I have never regretted a single coin, sometimes I feel half of the coins would have been enough. " Well, in general this was fulfilled. Managed to get some 1st and 2nd century RIC I like. Including Domitian. For the impulse part, well, let's say it was 80% accomplished. The problem is the desire to add new coins has decreased. The budget is starting to be a problem. The ones I could afford don't present too much interest and the ones I would like are a little expensive. So I just select what I really like.
I was looking at that thread not too long ago. Here were my goals: 1. Expanding my Gallienus zoo series - Check 2. I would love to get a coin from the 1200, 1300, and 1400's which would then make it so we have a coin from every century. - 2/3s complete 1200s: 1300s: 1400's: Nothing 3. Perhaps some Byzantine overstrikes if I can find them - check 4. I would also love to add an English hammered penny. - Check I've done pretty well completing my goals. Not sure I will be able to find something from the 1400s though. I've added lots of other coins but they weren't part of my originally stated goals.
If you don't look for a specific 15th century coin, I can recommend you to search for a coin from Alexandru cel Bun from Moldavia (1400-1432). Or Stefan cel Mare also from Moldavia (1457-1504). They are not rare and not expensive.
Thanks for that. I will check them out. I figured it would need to be something Eastern European since those are pretty abundant. I just am not at all knowledgeable about that area. I guess it is a good learning experience
My goal was to clean, identify, attribute and post in an album at least 100 Ancient Coins. I think I did very well and got more than 100. I knew nothing about ancients. My friends on CT helped a lot. Here is a photo of some of them:
The only goal I have done is "collect what catches my eye". The cost of coins this year & plus my pay cut because of "covid" it's put a damper on wanting some goal coins & I do look still. I still get occasional world silver when I spot one I like & price-wise. I'm fine with it, I've gone to some more affordable hobbies that bring just as much enjoyment.
There's still time to add some new imperial issues to the collection! And it's a goal, not a target, so you're doing just fine I think Now, how about me? This is what I said: I got a few off that wishlist of mine, but overall the list expended and I got coins that were not on the list. I think I'd better consider the wishlist as a very general guideline. Deviations are just fine. I did cut back on the purchases. 17 so far, and likely that's about it for the remainder of the year. Not voluntary however, but the higher prices made me do it! Money-wise however it's been a very expensive year. So here's my goal for next year: spend less! This is something my mom could have said to me, when you change the 'I' for 'you'.
My goal was to buy fewer but better coins. “My goals are to definitely reduce purchases to fewer, but higher quality coins. I don’t need 50 low grade small bronzes, I need 5 high grade big ones! To start 2021 off right I just spent a whopping sum on a gorgeous provincial bronze. Stay tuned!” And, i definitely followed it. I did spend a whopping sum on some gorgeous provincials! $67: $100:
I’ve managed to obtain 4 larger bronzes (over 40 grams each), and several smaller ones, including a few scarce types. Ptolemy IV Philopator, Ptolemaic Kingdom AE drachm (Series 5) Obv: Diademed head of Zeus-Ammon right Rev: Eagle with closed wings standing left on thunderbolt; filleted cornucopia to left, ΔI between legs Mint: Alexandria Date: 222-204 BC Ref: CPE B495, Svoronos 1125, SNG Cop 199 Size: 65.94g, 42mm (this group shot is only my drachms; my tetrobol isn’t included) I won a couple of small, nice bronzes so far this year (no photos yet though, and one of them is 3rd century BC). Wish I could say there was progress here. My budget has mostly been going towards Ptolemaics. Like Ptolemaics, post-Roman Germanic can get pricey as well. I did, however, acquire two large Justinian folles, which come from that same time period (only have photos of one of them right now). Justinian I, Byzantine Empire AE follis Obv: D N IVSTINIANVS P P AVG, diademed, helmeted, cuirassed bust facing, holding globus cruciger and shield, cross to right Rev. Large M, cross above, officina letter B below, ANNO to left, XЧ to right, CON in ex. Mint: Constantinople Date: 541/2 (year 15) Ref: SB 163. Size: 23.30g, 39mm Eight through Biddr so far (latest one was yesterday), and two or three elsewhere online.
Congrats on your very nice Faustina II pickup, @Roman Collector. I have a similar pickup early this year, and she wears a stephane as well. I think this sestertius is minted during Faustina II's earlier years, since there is the "FAUSTINAE AVG PII" on the obverse legend. As for my 2021 collecting goals, I believe I am right on track. I picked up an A. Pius aureus earlier (posted on CT before), plus a few Roman provincials. I added a Solidus not long ago, together with one or two RR coins. On the down side, I am still looking for a snake biga denarius, and a decent dolphin rider coin...
