1 oz American Gold Eagle (Type 2)

My 1 oz AGE (type 2) arrived today and I just wanted to share it with you guys and hear your thoughts and opinions.

So what do you think? Do you like it better? Or do you think the type 1 was better? Or do you not really care as gold is gold? ^_^

Honestly I wish they would put “.9167 fine” on it somewhere like most other countries do with the “.9999 fine” on them.

I like this T-2 better, if still not a 9 or 10 for me...maybe a 7/7+ or 8 at most. I have never much liked the T-1, as the eagle-landing rendition isn't proportionally correct. Think in general nowadays they often try for too much detail...maybe also in some cases too much action or story-telling detail...to try and fit/portray on a coin, IMO.

I think I like the reverse of the St. Gaudens Double Eagle the best out of all the gold coins ever minted in the US.

But the Liberty Head Double Eagle reverse is pretty nice too.

My guess is that the Mint engravers think that just because it’s gold they need to make it as detailed as possible but sometimes less is better.

 

Honestly gold is gold! That said, you did well!

 

I like the new ones better for both the gold and the silver

 

I still like the old reverse better. The new reverse looks like a meme source image.

Almost like if someone wrote a caption saying “Whatchu looking at?” below the Eagle’s head it would be something similar to an internet meme.

 

Yeah that’s how I feel about it too. I just like that by law the gold has to come from America and dealers tend to pay a premium for AGEs over bars and foreign gold bullion.

Lol that’s true! Although it doesn’t look like much when I realize how much I paid for them. I could have got like 4 kilos (8.8 pounds) of silver for the same price as these 2 measley ounces of gold.

But I am running out of space in my safe and Gold is a great way to store a lot of wealth in a small space.

Next up: A St. Gaudens Double Eagle!

My goal is to one day have enough gold saved up to trade for a REALLY nice ancient gold coin like a Greek gold stater or an aureus of Augustus or something like that.

One of my friends in another forum offered me a Persian Gold Daric for 2 oz of gold but I’ve seen them sell for like $2,500 in XF condition so it’s not quite worth it.
