I think ASEs will turn out to be the best over the long run. They are more popular and easier to resell. Dealers generally pay $1 or so over spot for ASEs and something below spot for silver rounds. And when the US Mint discontinues the American Eagle series someday [and they will], the ASEs will probably acquire some immediate numismatic value, and perhaps become as popular as the Morgan dollar, since supply will become fixed but demand will continue to grow.

Personally ASE's are just much more appealing to the eye as well. That coupled with the resale/demand for them makes it a no-brainer to me

I prefer foreign gold (ducats, francs, pesos, iran pahlavi fractionals, and sovereigns) from the 1830's-1950's. There are several reasons why I seek these out.

    1) They can be purchased at spot + 0.5%-1%. (often times found in PCGS/NGC plastic)

    2) They are just as liquid as "bullion" or "trade coins"(AGEs, Maples, Harmonics, and Rands).

    3) They have limited mintages.

    4) They have very small buy/sell spreads compared to modern "bullion".

If your looking to invest in the silver,I would buy generics for more value,if hoping to make a score numastically then bullion coins(ase's and such) are the way to go.buying cost as silver really doesn't matter to me,I'll try to show you why.

spot price on buy day $20.00 Generic round price $20.50 Ase price $24.50
spot on sale day $25.oo Generic sell price $24.50 Ase sell price $28.50

profit on generic round= 5.00 minus $1.00 in dealer fees=4.00
profit on Ase =$5.00 minus $1.00 in dealer fees=$4.00

This is assuming a 50 cent per buy/sell fee from your dealer, they may cost different amounts and sell for different amount, yet profit stays the same, and you can buy more of the generics with the same dollar amount than you can with the ase, making for a slightly higher profit depending on volume. this is Not taking into consideration collectors value as I'm talking silver for investment in silver,if you invest in ase's and other gov. minted silver coin then you have the opportunity to greatly increase your profit by selling/buying from collectors, but the collectors are going to want proofs and perfect specimens which sell for much higher than uncirc's from the get go,ruining the silver investing angle on these and hampering the collector value.

    CappedBustDimes,

I second that opinion - it's really nice to see the history in some of the foreign gold issues.

Eagles. Easier to buy and sell, due to their demand.

Plus they are at least worth a dollar if the silver market were to crash. :D
