Hi guys. My name is Scott, I'm 28 and live in Baton Rouge. I have been a novice collector for around 10 years. I enjoy a wide range of activities along with coin collecting such as firearms, drag racing, and working out at the gym. I am new here and for my first post I was looking for some opinions. This year was an extremely good year for me financially and as of right now I am able to afford a 2009 UHR double eagle from the mint. As you may know there is only about 2 hours left to order this coin from the mint. If you had the money to buy this UHR coin from the mint right now (and it would not hinder your finances) would you do it and why? EDIT: If I were to buy this coin I intend to hold onto it for many years until I am an old man i.e. 50 years old LOL. I do not intend to sell this coin if it were to gain $100+ in value in a year or two.
Depends on how bad I wanted one. They are a cool coin and I bought one the first day they went on sale. If you really really want one now, then pull the trigger. But if you're patient, you MAY be able to get one cheaper down the road. Sure, it'll be hard to buy one cheaper than the current mint prices from someone who just bought recently with the intention of selling. But remember, many many people bought when this coin first came out at $1239. So, if those folks sold today even at $1300-$1400 it would still be a profit to them, it would still be a decent premium over melt and it would still be cheaper to you than buying from the Mint now. But you should really investigate what these are selling for now on the secondary market. Search eBay completed listings. Then, if you think gold prices are going to go up over the next few months/years factor that in too as these coins will ride with the price of gold + a premium.
It's a beautiful gold coin that I think you should own if it appeals to you and your budget. I voted for you not to buy one from the Mint, esp. since it's just the last day. Wait a while then buy a TPG graded one from a dealer when you find a price you can agree to pay, it may be lower if you wait and people keep regarding this coin as just bullion with a high mintage. There's plenty of 69s and 70s flooding the market too so you'll have plenty to choose from. You can buy an empty box on eBay if you need one, or you can usually find the books alone on eBay for a small price if that's all you need out of the original packaging. :thumb:
How many times have you bought from the Mint, only to see the price go down on some of the coins and sets. Will the stock market be up next year or down? Go with your gut feeling. Either you want it or not. -O)
How do the UHR Eagle coin mintage numbers campare to the 2009 Buffalo 1. oz proof ( which I already own)? As far as the aesthetics of the UHR coin go... I'm not particularly drawn to it.
Good advice. I have been thinking about purchasing the UHR coin for a few weeks now. Gut feeling says no, but on the other hand, I did buy the 2006 Silver American Eagle Anniversary set (the one with the reverse proof) for $100 which my gut feeling told me was too high a price. Last I saw they were selling around $200. Choices choices! :desk:
Try following threads by Elaine_1970 for up to date sales/mintage figures. Current 1 oz. gold mintages (NOT FINAL): 2009 AGE: +1,303,500 2009 UHR: +112,065 2009 AGB UNC: +200,000 2009 AGB Proof: +41,553
I decided not to buy it today from the mint. Maybe I will buy one in the future or maybe I won't. We shall see. Thanks for the replies and info provided in this thread.
I have news for you young man... LOL..50 is not an old man! When you get there come put a flower on my grave and tell me you were wrong. BTW... if it were me I would say no...buy a nice Gem Sereis 1880 Legal Tender or Silver Cert and when you are really an old man, it will pay off for you. RickieB
Good decision. Always go with your gut feeling [assuming you did the proper research and aren't acting on the spur of the moment]. It usually is the correct way to go for YOU. Whether or not the coin goes up or down in value is irrelevant.
I couldn't agree more! I already own one, but bought another with 30 seconds to go. The eagle's wing feathers made up my mind...gorgeous! This coin is a real work of art. I may have saved a few bucks by buying one on the secondary market, but I wanted it in it's original packaging. I'm afraid of getting a counterfeit on the secondary market unless it's slabbed. I'll likely keep this one unopened and just stare at my first one.
