Okay I know alot of you have places in mind that don't keep up with current prices, etc. of metals, now most coin shops and pawnshops know there stuff and what it's worth, but I've found a couple places where with a little diligence and time I have found some great deals on silver, gold not so much,it seems most everyone keeps at least halfway idea of what gold prices are and/or finds out. I've gotten some great deals on old englehard bars and some art rounds/bars at Antique stores and flea markets, not real often or even routine, but real possible, last deal was a 10 oz. englehard old style bar for 75 bucks,it was tucked into a case with old watches and jewlery, someone slapped a 75 dollar stick on it without thinking about the value, maybe they bought it alot cheaper years ago and were happy with a small profit, silver was at $17.02 that day spot price. Feel like sharing your bargain finding spots, lets hear them, and some of the deals you have found!
Several of the thrift stores in my (rather rural) area don't bother to check if the metalware they put out is marked sterling or not. I've bought 5 small pieces within the last year, and immediately sold them for melt value to my local dealer.
Antiuqe Stores put coins out and are not keepig up with the price of silver or just don't take the time to mess with it. I have gotten several deals on coins that have not been updated since silver has been going up.
Craigslist for me. I do a daily search for "coin" and "coins". If you sort out all the millions of people offering to buy your silver coins, once in awhile, if you work quickly, you can find a great deal from someone selling a collection. I recently purchased the following for $300: 11 Morgan Dollars, 1 Peace dollar, 40 pre65 washington quarters, 1 standing liberty quarter, 43 Mercury dimes, 4 Walking liberty halves, 1 '64 kennedy, 1 Barber half, 10 Ike dollars (non silver), 8 silver certificate one dollar bills, a 1997 US mint set, a bag of wheat pennies, and a lot of random stuff. Essentially, if I were to sell everything but the Morgan's at "normal" prices, I would have basically gotten them for free.
there's a period key on this thing?:bigeyes::bigeyes:.........................found it thanks,I have a problem with that now and then, just didn't realize I was being graded on my English.lol
Yes, this does happen...... I too have bought silver relatively cheaply this way. Sometimes it was a sterling silver cigarette case, other times coins. Right now any pre-'64 quarter selling for $2.75 is a bargain, even allowing for sales tax. One time at a pawnshop in NE Colorado that seemed to focus on tools and guns, I bought two 1/10th oz American Eagles for $25 each. Spot was probably $400 or so at the time so it was a good deal but not as good as it might seem at today's prices. Still have one of them, gave the other as a gift some years ago. It's certainly worth investigating the possibilities, but don't take advantage of anybody. That lil' ol lady might have a whole WWII ammo can full back home that her late hubby left her 40 years ago.
