I have a coin (believed to be) of Philip IV of Spain with the reference of "G M 31" and I was hoping that someone might be able to identify the source of the reference (G M) for me, please.
In my 17th century Krause World Coin catalog. Netherlands/Zeeland... It has a KM#15 reference #, Bust of Prince Maurice right.
My Krause only lists from 18th Century onwards, so you have the advantage. I am happy to assume that you are correct! (Also Ver#95.4) I am still curious as to why my attribution says 'GM 31' though? Perhaps that was the attribution given by the seller when I purchased the coin?
I don't know anything about these coins.. and can't tell from the photo.. is the coin countermarked in any way? Perhaps C.M. 31 is a reference to a particular countermark? Just a wild guess..
There is an important catalog called "CNM", but I don't own a copy to check CNM = T. Passon, ed. Catalogus van de Nederlandse Munten geslagen sinds het aantreden van Philips II tot aan het einde van de Bataafse Republiek (1555 – 1805). 2nd ed. Apeldoorn. 2009 This is the coin, I think: https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces53417.html https://www.ngccoin.com/price-guide...-duit-km-15-1-1604-1671-cuid-26200-duid-76737 It's one of those crazy issues where KM says it's worth 7 in VG, unknown in F, 65 in VF, but they can't even find a picture to illustrate it.
Here's the page from the dutch CNM catalog for the double doit, at the bottum there are other catalog numbers for this coin.
It is not a coin of Philip IV because the Spaniards had long been kicked out of the Northern Netherlands by 1642, even though they only finally recognised Dutch independence in 1648. I am afraid I can't find a CM or GM reference book either.
@spirityoda My new copy of KRAUSE World Coin Catalog arrived today. You are right, - there on page 1231 - Netherlands/Zeeland... it has a KM#15.1 reference #, Bust of Prince Maurice right. Thank you.
