I've been looking for a good Germanicus for a long time after my last Germanicus died of bronze disease a few years ago. I think this replacement is pretty cool: This brings my Roman ruler count to 146. Next I need Britannicus for my Julio-Claudian set. Does anybody have a complete set of Julio-Claudian imperials they can share?
Nice! I wish I had a Sestertius of Britannicus or Agrippina Junior to show. Got all the other folks though, and here is Germanicus:
No, but I can at least share my Germanicus Posthumous issue of Caligula, in honour of his father Germanicus (died AD 19) Rome mint, AD 37-41 GERMANICVS CAESAR, Germanicus in triumphal quadriga right SIGNIS RECEPT DEVICTIS GERM, Germanicus standing left, rising right arm, holding legionnary eagle 17.79 gr Ref : RCV #1820, Cohen #7 Q
Lovely patina on that one, @GregH! Here's my very pedestrian specimen. Germanicus, 15 BC - AD 19. Roman Æ as, 11.18 g, 27.5 mm, 7 h. Rome, issued under Caligula, AD 40-41. Note: Reverse die-match to Henry Cohen, Description historique des monnaies frappées sous l'Empire Romain, Tome I, Paris, 1880, page 225, no. 4. Here's the wife, also with a big S C on the reverse. Agrippina I, wife of Germanicus, 14 BC - AD 33 Roman AE Sestertius 27.92 gm, 34.8 mm, 7 h Rome mint. A very pleasing example. I'm happy with my rough silver of him. Germanicus, with Divus Augustus (15 B.C. - 19 A.D.) AR Drachm CAPPADOCIA, Caesarea O:GERMANICVS CES TI AVGV COS II PM, bare head of Germanicus right. R: DIVVS AVGV-STVS, radiate head of Augustus left. 3.23g 16.5mm RPC I 3623a; cf. Sydenham, Caesarea 50; RIC I 61; BMCRE 106 The date of this issue remains uncertain. RPC places it late in Tiberius' reign, circa 33/4 AD, while the traditional dating, adopted by RIC and Sydenham, place's it in the first year of Caligula's reign, 37/8 AD.
Nice portrait and patina! I believe I have all the Julio- Claudians, with a provincial Britannicus, save Nero Claudius Drusus. He's a slippery one. Anyways, here's my Big Boots:
Germanicus (died 19 AD, father of Caligula [Gaius] & brother of Claudius), AE As, Memorial issue struck under Caligula, 40-41 AD, Rome Mint. Obv. Bare head left, GERMANICVS CAESAR TI AVG F DIVI AVG N / Rev. Legend C CAESAR DIVI AVG PRON AVG P M TR P IIII P P around large S C in center. RIC I Caligula [Gaius] 50, Sear RCV I 1822. BMCRE 74 (Caligula), Cohen 4. 28 mm., 11.99 g., 6 h. This is the same type as the coin that @Roman Collector posted above.
Nice example! I cut corners by collecting many of the members in provincial coins, but I have every coin-issuing member of the Julio-Claudian dynasty except for Agrippa Postumus, Drusilla and Julia (Caligula's sisters), Julia Drusilla (daughter of Caligula), Antonia (daughter of Claudius), Statillia Messalina, and Claudia (daughter of Nero). Anyway, my coins of Germanicus: Lifetime, with Drusus (lifetime issues are scarcer than you'd think) - Sardes, Lydia Posthumous, under Caligula Posthumous under Caligula, with Agrippina I - Aezanis, Phrygia Posthumous by Claudius
I am confident that I can share the absolute worst Germanicus in this thread - it came in an eBay lot, cost about a dollar, and unlike all the lovely specimens in this thread, mine can stand up on its edge.
