Sorry. I don't know you well enough to know your level of expertise. I've been collecting for fifty years and still run across areas where my expertise is limited or non-existent.

This is my recent optical illusion experience. Start with post #74:

That is a good one. I find it difficult to image proofs (especially in slabs), no matter how many different positions of the lights, without the dreaded "mirror finish" reflection bounce.
But, as in life, everyone is different. Many people can stare at an optical illusion and just never see it, and others see it immediately. The problem is "unseeing it" afterwards.

Cool optical illusion! Happened when I first looked at the picture. Then it suddenly looked normal!! Did you create this on purpose? If so, how?

I couldn't have done it if I was trying.

It happens to be my birth-year set and I picked it up because there were no distracting marks or toning on the silver or cent and a nice soft overall tone to the nickel.

Because my eyes aren't aging well, I use a digital microscope and 52" screen to "see" my coins these days. This effect is actually all I can get photographing the nickel through the cellophane.

To be honest, I'm still not sure it is definitely photographic doubling, but it is far more likely than a new 1958 Proof DDR.

So the question wasn't really rhetorical, but a search for knowledge in an area where my knowledge base is weak.

This is the quarter and with a similar effect and it even looks like the AR are connected at the base. I'm just hesitant to unseal a 63 year old proof set which would be necessary to eliminate the question.

Sorry. Between new collectors and old farts like me who keep forgetting words until I hear them again, I can't distinguish sarcasm from a legitimate question without some sort of aid.

There I go again. Answering a comment I've already answered. I'm well on my way to dementia. At least I'm not to the point where I don't know it's my problem and not everybody else's yet. But I'm getting there.

It keeps the reruns of Forged in Fire and NCIS fresh. Now where's my VHS player? I know it's around here somewhere.

Yup, this one got me also. It looked incuse until I concentrated hard and it went to normal.

(BTW- Anyone else notice the doubling to the tops of AMERICA and the top edge of the eagle's wing, below ERICA? Hard to tell but it must be MD since I'm not really seeing any separation.)

I never remember what I forgot, and when I do, I forget what it was that I didn't remember. But I will definitely forget old what's his name.
This getting old stuff sucks, or at least I think it does, I just don't remember.

If you view from close up it looks like its cut into surface. Move further away to view and looks normal. Just an optical illusion.
