    Here's another coin that I received in the lot of coins from the William Stancomb Collection that I won in a recent Roma auction:
    Istrus2.jpg
    MOESIA, Istros Æ 15mm.
    Late 4th- early 3rd centuries BC.
    Obv: Laureate head of Apollo right
    Rev: ΙΣΤΡΙΗ above sea-eagle on dolphin left, H to right.
    SNG Stancomb 156 (this coin, Fedesti Hoard);
    HGC 3.2, 1814.
    3.11g, 15mm, 6h.

    Auction notes:
    "This coin published in Sylloge Nummorum Graecorum, Great Britain, Volume XI, The William Stancomb Collection of Coins of the Black Sea Region (Oxford, 2000);

    [ID #SNGuk_1100_0156]

    Acquired from a 1930s collection; Ex Fedesti Hoard."

    I poked around on the internet and found that the Fedesti hoard was a pot of over 200 bronze coins from Istrus discovered in Vaslui, Romania in either 1976 or 1984. (A Discussion on Coin Forum gives both dates.)

    I also discovered that @Orfew has a similar coin that he wrote about in a CT Post last September. His coin is in much better shape than mine, but I'm still pleased to add this modest example my collection: it's my first plate coin and my first documented hoard coin.

    We have recently had threads asking collectors to show their dolphin coins and their coins featuring eagles. Instead, how about I invite anyone with a coin from the Stancomb Collection and/or the Fedesti Hoard to post their specimens?

    Good idea Glenn! I own a coin formerly in Stancomb's collection:

    12747.2.144_1.jpg
    Pontus, Amisos Æ18. Time of Mithradates VI, circa 120-111 or 110-100 BC. 4.06g, 18mm, 12h.
    Ref: SNG Stancomb 668 (this coin)
    ex Roma Numismatics, Auction XVIII, September 2019, lot 407

    This is one of the earlier issues of Mithradates the Great. It is unclear if it depicts Mithradates, or Perseus (or both!)

    I don't own a copy of SNG Stancomb. If you click through to the link you can see the image from that catalog. The image is low-quality.

    I have several coins from the Stancomb collection. It seems he decided to collect a relatively neglected area (at the time he started his collection) which strikes me as an excellent idea. They are still
    good value.
