Hi friends at CoinTalk, I hope you all are doing great. I just want to let you know that this 3rd 1982D small date copper penny is about to be graded. I will post a pic of the grade and proof to you all that this is the 3rd 1982 copper small date penny ever discovered. I hope that this will be enough proof to you all that yall shouldn't be so fast and judgmental to people when they post something on the site. For everytime I post on here I get negative feedback and rude comments. And all I've done was try to be honest and sincere to everyone here. I dont hold any grudges to anyone at all. I thank everyone here that has been polite and offering your great knowledge about so many different coins. May God bless you all. Peace
Right on man. I feel you. I made my first post the other day and got back some pretty smarmy responses. But I also got back a lot of cool and helpful ones. There are definitely some “know it alls” on this site that don’t know as much as they think. At the same time there are a lot of really knowledgeable guys that are pretty cool and genuinely try to help. I hope your penny checks out! I understand what some guys said about the 2 being close to the rim, but at the same time I do see quite a bit of curvature in the 2 and it might not be as close to the rim as we think. Good luck!
Iv'e been a Member for 7 months Now and I still occasionally get smart remarks . It for some reason takes time for respect in coin collecting . Some of the guys have been collecting for more than 50+ years and some of the questions asked are "Green Horn" questions I guess . Be patient, sit back and learn. When asking questions, ask Professionally ,Smartly and listen not argue with replies and you'll do fine .
It's your money.. Waste it all you want. And that's my honest and sincere opinion. God bless you.. Peace.
Have you ever considered that what you thought to be "negative and rude" happens to be "matter-of-fact" to others? Think about it!
You should send it in to have it authenticated and not just graded. TPG's will grade just about any coin sent to them. Ether way you will learn a lesson. Could be a valuable one or an expensive one.
With a coin like this you have to have the proof. It's that simple. What service are you sending the coin to?
Same question as Larry, Where did you send it PCGS? NGC? ANACS? Others have requested you post the results, but if you did find the 3rd example, it will be in Coin Week and the other numismatic publications as well as a press release from the grading company. Here is the original thread. Based on the shape of the 8 and distance between the 2 and rim, I still believe you have a damaged large date. However, sending it for authentication is the proof that's required. Wish you well, but don't count your chickens until it comes back. https://www.cointalk.com/threads/1982-d-small-date-copper-penny.379762/
I don't believe the TPG will even give it a first look because of the damage to the coin. It doesn't matter anyways, Cointop hasn't sent the coin anywhere. He is just trolling.
Okay, I have looked at the link @Oldhoopster gave, and it seems the main characteristic of the small and large date versions is the shape of the 2 in the year. If this is true, then I have one of each. I will post pictures later, but am I wrong?
I’ve been a member for a number of years and I’ve been a collector for over 60 years. In all honesty your sending this coin in is a waste of money. It’s not the coin you think it is. The members that shared their comments were being honest with you, not rude. We see a photo and read your description and comments and we have to make a judgement based on just that. I feel it’s a waste of money and you’ll be disappointed and that’s my honest opinion. But it’s your choice, so go ahead and pay the grading fees. All I ask is that you post the graded coin on CT so that we have the opportunity to apologize if you are correct. What’s to loose?
And we do it for free! Sure hope you specified you wanted it authenticated, not just graded. It's an extra fee and if you didn't, they will simple put a grade on the coin and gladly charge you for it. I, for one, hope you post the results as I would like to see what the TPG has to say about it.
Ho hum, here we go. When the coin is returned to you, do not hold your breath when you open it and see the TPG, you won't be able to gasp. Good luck!
The shape of the 2 is the main characteristic and other indicators are the shape of the top loop of the 8 in the date and the distance of the 2 from the rim.
After looking at the pictures more closely, my honest opinion is it’s just a large date d copper. The damage on the 2 makes it look like it might have a curve, but if you look closer at the base, it shares the same tail as the large date. On top of that, if you zoom in it’s pretty clear that the 1 and the 8 are not aligned at the top with the 9 and the 2. The weight is also not something to go off of because large date 82 d coppers are very common. I have a bunch. And just like everyone has been saying, it’s much too close to the rim. It’s rough because I don’t like killing dreams so I’m just trying to be honest and as gentle as possible. Here’s a couple of my 82 pennies. One is a small date zinc and the other a large date d copper. They’re pretty easy to differentiate.
