I finished up the last of my coin purchases for the year on some fractionals from APMEX today.

I am now ready for 2010, should the Mint ever get around to doing them.

APMEX just increased their premium for AGE's.

Yesterday they were sold out, I believe Krispy mentioned they probably weren't really sold out but just went offline. Today they have well over 1200 AGE's... So there's no way they were out of stock yesterday.

Anyways, if you want AGE's, it's now $90 over SPOT!!!! WOW!!!

Yep, just was on their site and looking into this at the same moment... they had 1,287 pcs. 2009 1 oz. AGE uncs this morning. Maybe now with gold easing a touch, they will have to change that premium if gold corrects much further back or they will be holding stock longer.

Wonder where they got the other 400 oz of AGE's from? 800 approx. yesterday, 1200 approx. today....

The US Mint is apparently done being a distributor right? At least for this year?

Like I jested before, folks like Yankee cashing in, as well as other dealers buying from the public and reselling to Apmex, and probably more scenarios like this who buy gold from the public below, or at spot to sell to bigger dealers like Apmex. These are my guesses anyway.

Ok, so wait, when I buy these 2009 "uncirculated" AGE's, are they coming from people like Yankee?

I thought uncirc were coins that came straight from the mint and never were in the hands of other people?

Or does uncirc just mean it's not circulated around in daily money exchanges?

2009 are still likely coming directly via Mint via Apmex to you. Anyone who bought and obtained 2009 AGEs and are already selling them at this time would likely be selling at a loss. Yankee (for instance) is probably selling older dates he's held a while/years, and bought for significantly less than today's cost/oz. Older dates are listed separately on their site and sometimes they indicate quality of coins, if scratched or worn, they put those in a separate category to order from.

As long as I still get the value of my gold, I'm fine either way. I do prefer to always buy uncirc though. I can't see these coins getting all that scruffed up anyways unless someone really enjoys playing dominos with them.. :D

Once I get mine, I look at them for a little bit and put them away....

anyone know why there arent any presale of slabbed age fractionals on ebay yet? when the agb came out they were everywhere.

I would guess people don't want to presale anything til it's in hand as the mint has been in a canceling frenzy.

I am really confused btw as Apmex's inventory is influx it's going up and down so I would say they are not running out now and the mint has started making more fractionals or said it will make more for such places as apmex to resell

btw why did the price of fractionals spike upfor 1/10 oz age's going up about $10-15 to $155 and yet the price of gold is down 66.90 so far.

Apmex raised the over spot premium this week but have not corrected it yet with todays drop in gold prices... been discussed a lot here this week in this thread, above.

Also to add, APMEX has bought even more AGE's.

They were somewhere around 1260'ish yesterday. Today they are a little above 1400 for 1oz AGE's.

So it makes sense they may not want to lower their premium since they would lose quite a bit.....

    fyi

Got another marketing memo from Apmex today, as I'm sure others here have as well, which may be of interest to this thread: (links removed)

The tone is a bit "hurry, hurry" for their sales effort but the last copy block is probably the most relevant to those here who've wondered/questioned in forum about their order(s) fulfillment and limited supply.

I think the mintage numbers on those 2009 fractional will be kind of low compared to other years. I however dont think I will be buying any I would buy if they had the "W" mint mark on them. I think they will be looked at only as bullion and not collectors. JMO

Are there any benefits to purchasing fractionals? I know the premium on them are little higher right?

What's the mentality behind getting a 1/10 oz gold coin?

The 1/10 mintage is much too high already. The 1/2 and 1/4 might be too high already to be worth anything more than bullion in future at the current rate of production. Only thing left is that the premium is usually higher for resale on the fractionals. Some years the uncs have been good buys for resale. I know I have seen them posted here for comparison of the best past years unc AGEs, but you can also look in your RedBook to get an idea of how some bullion can do better than just spot price on these.

Personally, I don't like the 1/10th size. I like larger coins, be they coins for collecting or the form of bullion I'd buy for investment. And I like them primarily for seeing the details of the design without the aid of magnification, the larger size is also attractive for their value of course. =)
