    1831 N-12 5 cc03 MS64 PCGS.jpg It's not 'white', but we large-centists refer to this as "The Harpooned Whale"

What a site! Thanks to all that participated. My white whale is the 1877 IHC within what Social Security can afford.

Improper cleaning...right before holing it! Coin abuse!!!

This coin would look good on @lordmarcovan vest of holed coins.

Well I guess that does explain the hole in the coin fad.
I read the book as a kid but I just couldn't understand why they didn't dump his butt into the sea and get out of Dodge. Tell the King/Queen/Leader he got drunk and fell overboard. Happens all the time.

Gregory Peck...one of the VERY best, and in my top 5 of all time. Moby Dick...somewhere below Jaws, Godzilla and Creature from the Black Lagoon.

Much better appearance and more reasonable montage !! One of my cats tease the dogs next doors by tight-rope walking along the top of the wood fence separating our back yards and stopping and licking her paws. Bad Cat!! Jim

I have read Moby Dick at least 50 times and every time I read it I come away with new insights. It is a masterful tale, with metaphors and symbolism on untold levels.

Remember this work was written long before the phonograph, electricity, radio, television, movies, computers, cell phones and countless other "modern" devices. It's intended audience frequently read weekly and monthly digest publications such as Harpers Weekly, Century Magazine, Puck, Scribner's, and others. The stories written for these magazines were often meant to be read aloud to the family or other small groups. The pace of life was slower, and entertainment opportunities were limited.

Melville knew his audience, and wove his tale with great majesty. I am sure there are reasons he chose this particular coin for inclusion in the story and thanks for adding one more clue to be deciphered for the admirers of Moby Dick.

My "White Whale" would have to be the 1915 Pan Pacific Commemorative Set in an original presentation case. I have seen a few of these at larger coin shows but the price of this set is way, way, way over my means.

“What do ye do when ye see a whale on the internet, men/ladies/other?”

You chop its head off and put your dog or cat's head on it!

Like I said, my wife owns the copyrights to our cat's photos.

Sorry, I can't put my cat's head on your big white whale Ahab!

I still say we should toss you over the side and drink the rest of your rum.

I have tried to read it on three occasions but I have never managed to get more than halfway through it. Sorry but to me it is just not well written. I've read many of the "classics" and pretty much without exception I find them very tough to stomach. I did like Count of Monte Cristo, but even it had problems.
