    Fractional Eagle and Buffalo

I purchased from the mint in dec. 08, a half ounce proof buffalo and a quarter ounce uncirculated buffalo. I chose these two in particular because when you take away the amount of four coin sets of buffalo from the total mintage numbers the amount of single buffalos' is staggering. They made over 8,000 proof 4 coin sets. With the half-ounce proof having a total mintage just over 12,000 that means there is only just over 4,000 single 1/2 ounce proof buffalos'. The same goes for the 1/4-oz uncirculated. I do understand that the 1 oz uncirculated is the top dog of the fractional series (under 4,000 single coins)but i dont consider that coin a fractional. It is a whole oz not a fractional oz. besides they made them for a couple years b4 the true fractionals were released (albeit not w mintmark). I got the second and third lowest mintage coins for under the price of the 1 oz. So i chose that route for an investment. I paid 850.00 to get both coins to my door in dec. 08. I have seen them sell for more than double the investment costs. The 1/2 proof has sold for almost $1,400 (almost 200% profit-yes that is profit) and the 1/4oz has sold for $1000 (200% profit also). I understand that alot of people like the idea of the eagle uncirculated being the hot fractional coins, but they only made the Buffalo fractionals one year unlike the eagles they have been making for over 20 years. The eagles may be a home run coin, but the buffalos' are grand-slam coins.

I really wish I snagged the $10 gold buff but back then coins weren't even a thing I cared about!

let's wait for the 2009 fractional bullion american eagle gold 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz and 1/10 oz on December, 2009. i think i prefer 1/2 oz then 1/4 oz. i don't like 1/10 oz. too small. just like i don't like dime.

I think I am going to trade an '08-W Unc. AGE set for an '08 Unc. AGB set, plus some extra scratch. I skipped the Unc. Buffs and would like at least one of each.

What do you guys think would be fair? AGE set + 1K? Maybe more, maybe less?

That would be a heck of a deal! Although I would be suprised if anyone would go for it based on the prices these have been going for. The 4 coin eagle sets seem to be selling for $3,000 give or take and the lowest I have seen a buffalo set for is $4250 on Ebay with most selling for closer to $5K or more for MS70 graded sets etc.

I think you will probably have to give closer to $1500+ right now, but I think the Eagle set is still on it's way up while the Buffalo's are somewhat topping out IMHO. So it may be worth while to wait a bit longer then maybe you can make the swap for $1K or less!
    $.02 :)

Today APMEX sent out an email that they are taking pre-orders for fractional 2009 AGEs. There is now a link to them on their homepage.

the pre-oder prices from apmex is good to buy right now. cause when november and december come. the gold will be much much higher. every december gold traded at highest on that year.

so which is it then elaine? are you waiting for the price of gold to drop or taking advantage of the APMEX pre-sale prices now? I don't think it's going to stay low, and each day pre-sale price may notch up a few cents/dollars going forward.

gosh. next year so many coins coming from the mint. 2010 clad proof, silver proof and unc set with first year of state park. 2010 lincoln reverse new design. 2010 return of the buffalo gold fractionals. 2010 ASE proof and (w) unc. 2010 girl scout commemorative. 2010 palladium set. those are my plan "buying list". i might just skip 2009 AGE bullion fractionals and 2009 american buffalo one ounce gold proof. unless gold drops. but as you said. gold will gradually go up. specially the christmas time.

i'm sorry. there will be no fractional buffalo anymore. no proof, no bullion and no (w) uncirculated. only one ounce proof and one ounce bullion. just like this year 2009. lastly, no one ounce (w) unc either.
