Gold nuggets go pretty close to spot on ebay, and that is a good deal. The smaller the gold, typically has a higher fineness. Most gold is 20-22K. I have mined a bit in northern california and have seen placer gold from different locations. Trinity gold (klamath) typically has a lower fineness, more alloy with silver, while feather river gold is 22K+ and very yellow with a hint if orange (iron). Real gold nuggets should have a dimpled surface, never completely smooth and sometimes shows rock and quartz. Miners typically clean their gold with a nitric acid solution, so a raw nugget might not have the gleam of a cleaned nugget. Specimen gold is also beautiful. I have 2 pieces around 7 grams each, thumbnail or miniature size. One piece is from the 16-1 mine and is spectacular looking.
