What was your best coin purchase that was bought while you attended a real auction. Mine was an 1867 Shield Nickel that I got for less than a dollar because nobody new what it was. I later sold the coin for much, much more. Anyone else have such luck?
I bought a (2007) Jefferson Presidential Dollar Missing Edge Lettering Error graded PCGS MS65 at a live auction. Sold it three days later for around 25x what I paid for it. Pretty much covered everything else I purchased in that auction!!!
Well, this one would be it for me - hands down, no question! And I got a good deal on this because the Bowers & Merena photo was so bad (see B&M photos below Todd's photos) and no one else was bidding on it. But this one won't be going anywhere, it's mine forever!
Easily it is the gold David Ben Gurion commemorative that I found at the bottom of a bag listed as Israeli mint sets and commemoratives. Payed $15 for a $750 gold coin.
hmm....sheet of walking liberties at 5 n 6X face about 3 months ago... half a sheet of Morgan and peace dollars for an average of 12X face (had 2 hole fillers in it) sheet of buffalos for 5X face...all full date, a few with horns.... i spent less than $250 at that auction and turned around and sold them for about $600 about 2 months ago toward a house purchase downpayment...
While I've viewed auction lots in-person, I've never attended or bid in a live auction (only via internet bidding)....Mike
What you guy's go to LIVE AUCTIONS  and you still have houses n money LOL If I went I think I would have to suer glue my hands in my pockets
I haven't been to a live coin auction since the 70's. I have no idea what I won anymore. I've got some items on my watch list at a late Sept auction by Heritage but I won't be attending.
Mike - this must change! I hope to see you at FUN next year and we can sit in on a few. There is nothing like seeing the coin in hand in pre-auction lot viewing and then trying your hand in a live auction. It's the best of both worlds - you know what you are buying and you have a good chance of getting the piece at a competitive price. Now, I have only done this once, but it was very satisfying.
I have to tell you that I find live auctions about as interesting as watching grass grow. Also, I find that by bidding online, I resist getting get caught up in the moment and the urge to overbid, and in person I suspect I wouldn't be as disciplined. So while I appreciate the offer, I will likely pass on the live auction part.... Now getting together and reviewing coin lots with others would be a wonderful experience, and I'd love to do that this January.
Oh.....I meant to only sit and bid on coins one wants, not hang out listening to the auctioneer's holler on coins I have no interest in! I understand where you're coming from. Until then, I really need to save some money!
