I used to not take the time to look at new coin, as I thought there wasn't much to offer. New coins are often overlooked as some think they do not have significant errors, but the shield cents have some pretty strong doubled dies attributed to them as well as other errors. They are definitely coins to look at if you CRH. If you think about it, the errors with recent coinage are much easier/likely to be found as they haven't been in circulation for as long as some of the memorial cent errors and varieties. This leads to not as many people who know what they are looking for having the chance to cherrypick it from circulation.

I find the technical debate about what caused this very educational and interesting. What is missing for me in this thread is an acknowledgement that this is quite a stunningly cool and amazing find! Congrats on the find, and thanks for sharing @CaptainMac.

It was on the die, it came from the die, @CaptainMac nailed this. These pictures are progressions of it, just as he said. This die was coming apart, just look at the heavy polishing to try to save it. Look at where the polish lines abut against the profile, which is recessed on the die. Notice how that intersection is progressively deeper compared to the parts of the lines further out from the profile. It gave way, that's what happened here. The intersection gave way and the crevasse left projected out in the direction of the polish lines deepening and opening up that brittle die further up along those lines. This die looked exactly like this. This was a fantastic find. These polish lines set the conditions for it. Keep these coins together. Together they tell what happened to this die.

Thank you for this mention! I did end up going through more of the rolls I have from the box, and have more examples of pennies that must have been struck in-between the ones shown in the original post, as they look slightly different. I want to post them, but did not want to make a super long post again as this one was long enough. I also cannot get the greatest pictures of the entire coin as opposed to the view through my microscope. I can't seem to edit this post either. If the people here would like to see the other examples I found, I'd be happy to make another post, but just be prepared for a longer post than usual lol.

I don't know that everyone is seeing this the way we are, but that's a good offer to show more, and I'd say just use your own judgment on that. In the meantime just keep racking up the evidence, as you said. The case you're trying to make is these came from the same brittle die, so you know what you're looking for. I'll just add, should that be right, these are snapshots of a die breaking up, and the only thing cooler perhaps would be a video of it.

Now that I think of it, you don't happen to have one of those lying around loose, do you? Lol.
