I had posted this on the Crown-Sized silver thread but forgot to put it here. I've been wanting to add a non-German wildman coin for quite a while. Missed out on a really nice piece last month in a Heritage auction. I had put in a bid for close to double the estimate but still lost. My bid was about 1/3 of the eventual winning bid. This piece was kind of a consolation prize. It was purchased from one of my favorite dealers. No bidding required and it was considerably more affordable. A wide crowned mantle is behind shield and supporters and also divides value above. Date below shield with mintmark at sides. Reverse Legend: 1 SPECIES / V. 1846. S. Engraver: Harald Conradsen Composition: Silver Fineness: 0.8750 Weight: 28.82g Diameter: 38mm
I have been wanting a Wildman for awhile, and just got my first one. The population reports on these coins when I go look are really low. Is the reason that a lot do not get grade?
Most of the population of these are in Europe and as a rule, European's don't put coins in TPG plastic. As far as I am concerned the population reports on most of these are not helpful. Yours is really nice. Do you have a photo of the reverse?
Another new addition is expected in the next couple of days. I added this on mostly because I am working on a set of mining Thalers but it does have a couple of nice Wildmen on it (bonus). I have my eye on a couple more coming up for sale soon. They will be more of the traditional design. Yield thaler 1752 IBH, Zellerfeld. Yield of the 'Duke Friedrich August Bleyfeld' mine. Obverse: Landscape with field rods from a building on the right to Schachtgöpel on the left, which is behind a mining dump, in front of it a column with a princely hat between clouds, above the metal sign for lead Reverse: Two wild men hold coats of arms under a princely hat. Welter 2725, Fiala 2588, Davenport 2167, Müseler 10.3 / 57, KM 942.
Wow! I love the intricacy of those designs. If I had deeper pockets, I would definitely be susceptible to “thalermania”.
As I hoped, I was able to add another Wildman to my collection from yesterday's CNG sale. It is one of the more scarce types. There was a second that I could have picked up relatively reasonably but it sold for well over what others have sold for. GERMANY, Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel (duchy). Julius. 1568-1589. AR Taler – “Brillentaller” (42mm, 29.08 g, 3h). Goslar mint. Dated 14 June 1586. Coat-of-arms surmounted by three elaborately crested helmets / Wildman standing left, holding lit candle and uprooted tree trunk; skull, hourglass, and spectacles hung from right arm. Ophthalmologia XI.83 (this coin illustrated); Welter 579; Davenport 9065. Lightly toned, areas of weak strike, a few flan flaws, traces of mount. VF. From the Dr. Jay M. Galst Collection. Ex Hess-Divo 266 (25 October 1995), lot 642. “On the Brillentallers we find spectacles depicted along with a skull and an hourglass sand clock, which may signify the temporary nature of all earthly goods and encourage penitence and self-evaluation. The symbolism of the spectacles is unclear, but may signify that the Duke’s subjects should open their eyes and participate in the then raging battle between the Protestants and Catholics and, with the help of the spectacles, find the right camp.” Opthalmomogia p. 413
So I ended up with my first ever Wildman. He’s just a little guy but very exciting nevertheless. The way I collect is by purchasing wholesale lots and collections and keeping what is interesting to me and my son. We rarely, if ever, seek out an individual coin. So when this Wildman popped up in a recent lot, I was super excited.
Here is my second wildman.... From Braunschweig-Blankenburg/ Furstentum Ludwig Rudolf 1714-31 AV Quarter Dukat 1728/26 unlisted in Krause This place only existed for 17 years/ before it was absorbed into Braunschweig-Wolfenbuttel
I have been able to pick up a few minors in bulk lots. That ones in pretty good condition for a bulk lot. Nice as always. One of these days I will pick up a gold one.
