A good read.. https://coinweek.com/coins/coin-profiles/us-coins-coin-profiles/united-states-1980-p-lincoln-cent/ Interesting statement.. Quote - "In 1974, then-Mint Director Mary Brooks publicly encouraged people to spend cents rather than hoarding them, and new rules were promulgated that made melting down cents punishable by a fine of up to $10,000 or five years in prison." I recall some banks and stores in my area were offering $1.10 for every $1.00 of cents brought in during those shortages in the 70s
Thanks @paddyman98 ! It's an interesting article. Unfortunately, be ready for the machine doubling stampede.
Very good read, I have several in the 60-63 range. BTW, the word “juxtapenultimate”, used at the beginning of the article, is never explained. Furthermore, a web search does not locate an explanation, Dictionary.com does not include it in their database, nor does Merriam-Webster.com. They were referring to the date. Of course, “penultimate” means the one before the last, or 1981 in this case, so using “juxta” must mean “the one before the one before the last”. And, “juxta” is not listed either. That’s very awkward, but I hate guessing and had to look it up. Curious minds want to know. @paddyman98 ...Thanks for sharing...Spark
Interesting indeed. All I'll say is...if the penny is here to stay for the foreseeable future, here's hoping they scratch (change, eliminate) that awful, chestnut-like 'shield' reverse and return to the Lincoln Memorial.
Perhaps the word is in the printed volumes, but you would have to go to the library, which are closed until the pandemic subsides...Spark
great article paddyman98. i don't recall any stores or banks offering extra $$$ to people that would bring in their penny's at that time. here's a couple more articles when pennies with .950 copper content became very popular. the first article was from 2006 and the second was from 2011. https://abcnews.go.com/Business/sto...ders-cash-thousands-dollars/story?id=15076522 i would bet there's more...
Indeed, 1980 is the one before the one before the last (i.e. the one before the penultimate [1981], and two before the ultimate [1982]). I think the correct word would have been antepenultimate. ante- meaning "before". Although juxta- means "near", so maybe they weren't sure if they should include the 1983 copper mistakes in their reckoning! ultimate (last), penultimate (last but one), antepenultimate (last but two), preantepenultimate (last but three), propreantepenultimate (last but four)
I'd rather see the whole design changed, same with the dime. Lincoln has been on the obverse for 112 years. Time for a change. And the dime hasn't changed one bit since 1946. WAY past time for a change there too. I vote to put Miss Liberty back on our coins rather than dead Presidents.
Well if they're hoarding cents they could probably pay of that $10,000 with the cents... It'll be a pain in the ass for the person counting the money, but hey that's what they get for charging them $10,000
