What's up with the date here? Spacing between 19 14, and D too close? I tried to get different views. Thanks, Sley
I'd have to give that one the "didn't even try" award -- you can still make out the remains of the 4 in the damaged part. And the mint mark is in the wrong place, in addition to the spacing issue you already pointed out. https://www.cointalk.com/threads/is-this-a-real-1914-d-cent-or-altered-fake.265505/#post-2182230
Here’s one I have. The photo doesn’t do it justice. It has great toning, I just didn’t want to take it out of the 2x2 and couldn’t get a better picture.
The 19 on your coin is equally spaced from the 14, as in my 1914, and I could almost make a case that the 1 in your image should have been a 4. Its very faint. Does anyone else see it? I know its dark, but I can see a faint slant, where the first 4 would have been.
The gap between the 9 and 1 is a sure give-a-way for an altered cent. The one @Danomite posted is better looking than mine. https://coinauctionshelp.com/1914-d-lincoln-cent-counterfeit/
There are what look like tooling marks on the shoulder where the VDB is on post-1917 cents. It's an altered 1944-D.
