Several months ago I went over to the dark side and bought several of the leading cryptocurrencies. The ‘investment’ was small enough so that if the bottom fell out I wouldn’t lose sleep. So far so good.

Yeah, about 10 years ago, I was going to invest $10,000 in bitcoin. but instead, I invested it in Pot Stocks and only made $400,000.

Ooh, can I play? I've got email from a friend about it, with a link to a security analysis, dated July 25, 2011. This was in the wake of a Mt. Gox breach that took it from $17.50 per coin to 1 cent per coin (until they got things sorted).

Why, yes, I do wish I'd bought (or even mined) a few dollars' worth at that price.

As for "First hundred people", well, Time had at least two stories on crypto in 2011, as did Forbes. Wired even ran a story titled "The Rise and Fall of Bitcoin" in 2011. It was being discussed on Slashdot in 2010, if not before.

If I'm reading my history correctly, $10000 10 years ago would have bought about 1% of the total supply of Bitcoin. I think you would've faced some challenges trying to complete the transaction.

Bitcoin has its points. Why not do a little of both.

Maybe not back then as thats how most of the bitcoin billionaires did it with large purchases like that

Pretty sure most of the whales did it by mining them. Then again, I've only heard from one whale, so I'm not sure what the story is with the others.

Technically the winkle twins would be two. Theres a number of them that have made millions and a few that have made billions

I seem to recall a store offering Bitcoin as a sales promotion.

Can anyone remember the name of the electronics store that offered a free bitcoin with every purchase waaaaay back when? (It may have been a choice between a free bitcoin or some % discount if you bought some special video game?)

I saw it was over $27,000.
No matter how high it goes, once the dumping starts it's going back to $6000,
which is still WAY overpriced IMO.

You guys have been saying that for years. You can literally go back 50 pages in this thread and see the exact same things being said in 2017

And sure enough, it fell below $6000 by November of 2018. In fact, it fell below $3300 that December.

For that matter, it dropped below $6000 again in March of this year.

Do you seriously think that it's going to hold value once the regulators target the big exchanges? I'm seeing that as the main "under $1000" possibility.

It hasn’t been under 1k in 3 years since it started its rise. The regulators have already regulated it forcing information from the exchanges for tax purposes.

There’s no reason to believe it will go under 1k or really even close to that. It’s been gaining in popularity not losing it. Even if the US and Europe targeted it will still be huge in Asia among other places.

Ethereum and Litecoin purchased at 2/10 of a penny. My oldest son texted me this like I suppose to know something..He bought the bitcoin years ago at 800.00 per coin....... bought 4 against my thoughts.. said "you don't understand dad" I didn't and still don't.. I texted back and told him to sell a bit coin or two.. Thats the process I would like to see......show me the money

Bitcoin is the perfect speculative vehicle -- because it doesn't require a driver, or fuel, or cargo, or tires, or roads. It's like tulip bulbs, only there don't ever have to be any actual tulip bulbs.

Philosophers will still be discussing it millennia from now.

Edit to add: but in the meantime, lots of people can get rich, at least on paper, er, screen. We're nowhere near running out of greater fools.
