The UPS man just handed me my order of the new Bush dollars. I ordered one roll of “P” and one roll of “D” primarily to plug the holes in my Dansco’s but also have a dozen promised out to others. I am pleased with the mans portrait. The mint did a good job with that... Two observations. There is an added element on either side of the presidents portrait. I have looked with every loupe that I own and cannot make out what these are to the left and right of his bust. These elements do not exist on the other Presidential dollars. Have engravers initials been added? Secondly, I found it interesting that the Denver minted dollars are pristine. The Philadelphia minted dollars all look like they were dropped in the parking lot before they were rolled up. The state of the coins are dramatically poorer than the Denver minted dollars. Just an odd observation.
Send them back Randy. They will have plenty to replace them with. I quit Presidential dollars in 2012 when they made it cost prohibitive for the average collector. I always bought a roll of each. Then they stopped offering them that way. A couple of years later they began to sell them in single rolls again, but it was too late for me.
Well, if these were a purchase where the quality would dramatically affect the future value, I would probably send them back. I don’t see these ever really being worth more than face value. I just feel kind of bad for the fellows I have promised dollars to. When they receive them they may think I was using them in a tiddlywinks game or something!
EH and JFM on obverse... Mint Artistic Infusion Program (AIP) artist Elana Hagler created the design, which Mint Chief Engraver Joseph F. Menna sculpted. DE on reverse... As with the earlier Presidential $1 Coins, this coin bears the common reverse (tails) design featuring a striking rendition of the Statue of Liberty, designed and sculpted by former Mint Sculptor-Engraver Don Everhart. Previous presidential dollars had the initials on the dead guy's shoulder(s).
Very nice @Randy Abercrombie. That is certainly one of the more accurate likenesses of the series. Not to mention I've also noticed the same thing with circulation coins from the Denver Mint.
Right. I have a good number of partial rolls of the earlier presidential dollars and Sacagawea dollars. They are only worth a dollar. I use them for tips at the golf course.
Realistically speaking, though, it would seem, at least in my opinion, that the Denver Mint has a higher degree of quality control.
@Randy Abercrombie I have also had the same quality issue with Philly coins but almost never with Denver. Some of my Philly Sacs were loaded with wash spots and nicked to no end. The Prez dollars have been no better. There seems to be no quality control there at all.
Thanks for posting these. I do have a question and I don't mean to hijack your thread. Is the San Francisco Mint going to produce the Bush dollars? I don't see an S coin listed anywhere on the Mints website. Thanks!
I asked this question in a previous thread. https://www.cointalk.com/threads/ge...-date-will-there-be-a-proof-an-s-mint.370007/
