True, but it wasn't a gold or financial markets thing until mid-to-late February. 1st notice I saw was Cramer talking with hedgie David Tepper
For the US yea, other markets were hit sooner. Only point was that the majority of the uptick was during the virus
I'm for sure thinking $2,500 in 2023 minimum, we'll see. Great forum here if you want to hear from the naysayers! That said, most of the naysayers on this forum don't even buy gold but that's okay as everyone has an opinion and I don't mind reading about them! Personally, I feel if you own gold, hold onto it because it's about to go up! May take a year or two but the whole world is in a financial mess, so it's gonna go up!
Here's a link on why attendance has gone down, reason is the internet! https://www.coinhelp.com/coin-help-blog/2017/6/Why-is-attendance-down-at-Coin-Shows-
ZIRP -- 0% rates -- are still relatively new, once people realize that is the New Normal, they will recognize the opportunity cost of gold is close to nothing.
Could be, wish SC had given more details on specific coin shows. SC has also started up a local coin show -- or did, before The Virus struck -- and he got off to a good start. I reported on it in the Coin Show Thread.
Agree 100%. People no longer have to leave their house to attend shows and find coins. I enjoy the conversation with dealers I buy from. I really hope shows don't go away but the amount of work it takes will probably cause it to happen.
I agree, it's great to walk the bourse check out what's happening and mingle with the peeps. Hell, even if you don't have much to spend you can still have a really great time!
But if online SPURS people to get into coin collecting -- or strengthens their bonds to the hobby -- you will also get people more likely to go to conventions like FUN. That is what happened with me. The CASUAL buyer probably won't go to the big national or even regional shows...maybe not even a local show with free admission. But the SERIOUS collector will probably at least test-drive a regional or big national show. I do believe the Big National and Regional shows can do a better job of promoting their shows and highlighting the benefits: coin collecting courses...meeting your internet friends in-person....high-end auctions...tons of new dealers you'd never meet online or in-person....vacationing and meals in the area....etc. I had a blast at my 1st FUN earlier this year and it's a good save-the-date item to make sure I can attend in the future and spend some $$$.
No doubt and I have an idea to promote their shows! Say the event has 50 tables to rent out, 25 are for coin sales and 25 are for gun sales! Guns get one side of the bourse and coins get the other side! That's a win win for both, maybe not in California tho' as we're not big on guns here.
The folks who run coin shows are not going to want to get into the legal and liability issues by having guns at the show. And what gun dealers will want to piggy-back on a non-gun show and hope it turns out profitable for them ? Right now, gun dealers are doing so much business they don't need to travel and do shows...they are only worreid about enough gun and ammo inventory to meet demand !!
Not going to a national show doesn't make someone only a casual buyer. With the internet many people no longer want to spend 2k+ and take days off work to travel to a coin show if it isn't local. Half the time the bigger shows that go all week are a shell of their former self by the weekend when working people could go so it often ends up being disappointing. This was all true before the virus
No, I agree with what you are saying but I am not saying that not going to a Big Coin Show = Not A Serious Collector. I'm saying that the infrequent buyer -- even infrequent looker -- won't be going. It could be someone who sees a scary segment on CNBC or the CBS Evening News and decides to buy 1 or 2 bullion coins, put them away, and never look to buy again.
You may be right, but I'm sure somethings gotta change if shows are going to continue after this pandemic. Maybe old signs, beer memorabilia, railroad memorabilia or something else! Coin show organizers can take their pick!
There's really not much difference, plenty of gun shows have a couple coins dealers. A hybrid show would actually make perfect sense unless someone was philosophically opposed to it since the there is a lot of cross over in the crowds. You can also bet that most bigger shows have at least a few dealers carrying whether they're supposed to or not
With what is heading our way scenario #2 is a real result. Medicare for all. Free College Tuition etc etc etc. Who the hell do they think is going to pay for this and how. I do not think it will reach $3k, but I have several scrubs ready to part with just in case it does.
