Hello ladies and gentlemen, Last mail for 2020 with ancient goodies arrived. I have some pretty worn coins I would like help with identification if this is possible. This one is clearly Antoninus Pius but cannot nail it. 10.25 g 24.60m so an As. Reverse legend - nothing visible. Obverse a clear PIV. Tried to narrow it down using the position of PIVS but nothing yet. Many thanks in advance.
Antoninus Pius AE Dupondius. 156-157 AD. ANTONINVS AVG PIVS PP IMP II, radiate head right TR POT XIX COS IIII S-C, Providentia standing left, globe at feet, holding sceptre. RIC 953, Cohen 978.
Many thanks for your help. Sorry, editing as I want to understand properly - shouldn't a radiate crown be required for a Dupondius? I know that for Faustina Sr this is not a rule, but does this apply for Antoninus Pius?
RIC 953 is a dupondius; but both coins shown in this topic are asses. This is 953-- OP coin might be 957; which has the same legends as 953; though I can't really make out the legends
Sorry, just noticed that the description I copied and pasted from wildwinds is wrong, should be laureate!
Thank you both for your help, in the meantime I have nailed it down to 957. I like to identify all the coins I have down to the RIC number whenever possible.
That is a very good observation. I think this will remain a mistery since the only difference between 972 and 957 is the XX/XIX
