    That's a 1943 Steel Cent.. Your title states 1944.

Looks like damage to the rim on the Reverse at 5:00

That would of created a lot of excitement if it were really a 1944 Steel Cent which actually do exist ;)
Considered a transitional mint error and worth thousands!

I don't know where my father got his 1943 cents, but I have over 100 of (P) cents, about 25 D's and about 5 S's. Many are in great shape and look like they've been in a box their whole life.

    I'd go XF-45 on the 1943 Steelie.

I have a ton of them also with many being worn and showing their age but they are still keepers to me. No comment on grade thanks for posting the coin.

What is the best way to store the 1943 cent coins? Or, at least, a good way to store them?

I have them in 2X2s in a coin box I got from Amos. I really don't want something to happen the coin while in the 2X2s.
