I have had these for a while, and I’m thinking of selling them relatively cheap, with some others, but the weight on these is slightly heavy (within tolerance?), so I am wondering if anything else stands out. Coin 1 appears to have been plated. I am not worried about overall condition, just authenticity of the coins. Not magnetic. Your thoughts? I apologize for the poor pics, too.
How heavy are they? I don't see anything immediately obvious in any of those pictures that sets off red flags, but fakes have gotten quite convincing. If the diameter and thickness are right, it's quite difficult for fakers to get an alloy that weighs within the typical range.
Thank you for the response. My scale only goes to tenths, and these come in at 26.8, while an MS would be 26.73. I can understand the suspected plated coin being a little heavy, but the other coins should come in at 26.7 or possibly even 26.6 due to wear.
I was thinking polished at first, but leaning towards plated due to lack of any residue within the devices. The only ‘dirt’ that I see on the coin are in the nicks on the edge near UNUM.
In that condition, they won't have lost enough weight for your scale to detect. Wear has mostly moved metal on the surface (bumps and scrapes), and only removed metal from the very highest points. I doubt if any of them have lost more than a few hundredths of a gram. A 1/10g scale can be expected to be off by at least a tenth of a gram. You can try it out with stacks of uncirculated nickels (5.0 +/- 0.2g) and see what you get. Or, do you happen to have any modern US commemorative sets that include silver dollars? They should have the same weight and dimensions as the Morgans.
Because they can still sell the fake for more than the cost of materials, and because common dates get less scrutiny than keys.
Doesn't seem logical to me. Ruining your reputation, possible freedom, etc. for a $20-40 coin. I imagine there's some dumb scammers out there but for a few bucks, can't see it!...... Just my opinion!
