    Hello folks,

Does anyone know anything about this Queen Charlotte 1818 Death Medal (Brass) with words on obverse (photos attached in the post)? I got this one from my wife's grandfather's collection.

There is one in a museum in Wales (donated in the 1930's)...and a similar one in the British Museum (which gives me pause that it's of interest/rare) . No pricing info from past sales. It may be exceedingly rare - but may or may not have significant value on the open market. There is a more common Q. Charlotte death medal with a plant on the obverse - this has wording. It appears that this one may have been struck in both copper and bronze - I have the bronze variety. @lordmarcovan has one in his collection that has a hole for suspension. Any info is appreciated! Thanks!

Here is one link that has the medal without any pricing info - https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces171545.html

Here is a link to the museum in Wales with some in their collection:

    Best regards,

@Coin Obsessed - thanks for the find. You did better than I did to find one on the open market. Let's see what the collective group says about the history of this Medal....

@TrademarkRob (hey, good name!;)) - welcome to CoinTalk! Sorry I was absent when you joined up.

Below is mine, in copper, with a hole. I was offering it for ten bucks before I decided to keep it. Paid about a quarter for it, since I found it in a bulk lot of tokens.

As I mentioned in our private discussion, these might indeed be scarce or even rare, with surviving examples perhaps numbering only in the dozens, or hundreds, rather than thousands or more. (I don't know.)

But I suspect demand is not very strong for them, so even if they are rare, they're not likely to command a very strong premium unless they're in Mint State or such. (Again, I don't know- but that's my suspicion.)

I decided this one was a "keeper" since I've had the idea of restarting my old "Holey Coin" collection.

Trivia side note: this is the queen for whom Charlotte, North Carolina ("The Queen City") was named.

Glad you're here. Hope you'll stick around and post some of the other coins you inherited.

    Numismatic Regards,

~Robertson ("Rob") Shinnick, aka "lordmarcovan" anywhere there are coins being discussed in cyberspace.

I notice the Numista listing (in your first link) gives it a Rarity index of 95 (on a scale of 1-100), based on what's out there - just in other Numista members' collections alone.

This indicates to me that it's relatively scarce, but not rare overall. There are definitely others out there.

PS- I hope you don't mind my taking the liberty of moving this to the World Coins section, where it's more likely to be seen by folks with the right specialized knowledge, perhaps.
