Philip I AR Antoninianus, ca. 247 AD, Rome Mint. Obv. Radiate, draped, & cuirassed bust right, IMP PHILIPPVS AVG/ Rev. Elephant walking left, bearing driver holding goad, AETERNITAS AVGG. RIC IV-3 58, RSC IV 17, Sear RCV III 8921. 23 mm., 4.2 g.

    Philip I Antoninianus (Elephant) - reverse 2.jpg

Next: Another Roman elephant, either Imperial or Provincial.

Edited to add: I picked out this example of the coin because I thought that the elephant looked cuter than many others of this type -- to me, it looks almost like a baby elephant.

There is some disagreement as to whether this coin belongs with the Madurai Nayaks or Perunjiya Pallavas of Sendamangalam (13th century AD?).

Raja Raja Chola stater 985-1014 AD 4.3g, 16mm. Obv: Standing king blowing a conch, with a lamp to his left and a lotus, crescent and four pellets to his right, rev: seated king sniffing a lotus with the Nagari legend reading Raja Raja. He was the first king to extensively issue coins of this design, yet some say he copied from the Sri Lankan gold version. But I believe he was the first ruler to make coins of this design, as there has been no native coin of 'octopus man' design ever founded dated before 985 in Sri Lanka, even their gold coins were minted under the control of Cholas! And also the Cholas who invaded and controlled Sri Lanka made their coins with crude design, now compared to the more refined Sri Lankan coins hints as to which came first.
