Interesting finds (aka where the 67s are from)...

It's blatant jealousy. One of the biggest names in numismatics is having what could become the highest quality U.S. coin collection in history built by another dealer. He is taking over top spots and fame from her clients, and she is angry when he upgraded a set of coins he bought from Bruce with a coin she didn't approve of.

This is why there is so much distrust in this hobby with multiple upgrades and possible back door deals to get coins in higher holders (not necessarily targeted at the auctioneer).

I liked that one (just not the price or grade).

 

If the coin is regraded "in-house" ie. came into a TPG in that TPG's slab for a regrade and the grade was changed, then yes they do adjust the numbers. If it comes in in another services slab, no they don't inform the other service that it is no longer in their slab so the numbers don't get changed.

 

How much LOWER would that coin cost in the other 2 holders (approx.) ?

 

I wish there was a panel discussion (taped and on YouTube) from a big national coinshow where reps from all the major TPGs discussed how this stuff happens.

I don't mind an occasional 1-point change....but 2 grades and a CAC or 1 1/2 grades and a CAC from a lower grade with no CAC (and I doubt the coin wasn't submitted before for CAC) ?

 

So our population numbers for certain coins in certain grades could be off by 5 or 10%....or 50%.

 

Yes the population numbers can't be trusted. I can't remember the coin but I believe there is actually one issue where the "population" is greater than the mintage.

 

It sold for under $1,000 in the NGC 67 holder. I’ll have to find the thread to get specific info.

And in the latest slab, this is the coin that sold for over $300,000 ?

And the selling firm and their buyer are OK with paying 100x what it cost in the previous holder and 300x what it was in the holder before that ?

God, I'm glad I stick mostly to Saints and inexpensive silver.

 

This is even more insane....all the sales/re-grades are within 18 months of early-2018 !!

Someone must have alot of $$$ and not care -- maybe didn't even realize -- that he is paying 120x what it sold for 9 months earlier and 400x 16 months earlier.

 

Doesn't matter. It's (labeled) The Finest Known, and if you don't pay up, it means that somebody else will have The Finest Known, not you, and everybody will be able to see on the Registry that you don't have it. Are you really going to put up with that, just to save a measly fraction of a million?

And, on the flip (ahem) side, if you're holding a coin like that that's (labeled) close to Finest Known, and you've got a shot at that kind of value jump, what's going to stop you from recycling it through the TPG just as quickly as the fastest tier can carry it, knowing that there's at least a tiny chance each time they'll get tired of you and upgrade it?

Perhaps when economy is down , pro graders are soliciting for re-submission of slabbed stuff , for revenue generation ???

 

One fellow I know has been doing the opposite. He’s been taking PCGS 67’s and even a few 68’s and sending them to NGC And getting 68 and 68+’s.

 

As a pure novice here, this all seriously shakes my confidence in grading services. Makes me wonder if some of mine might get bumped a point or two. Going from ms62 to ms64 would make me happy. Maybe when I get better at this photography thing I can post a few.

SPECIFICALLY, for DATE on pro grader's grades ....................................

 

Just pure conjecture - Is it possible that the grade could have been assigned as part of collusion between grader and owner? Does PCGS have multiple graders for each submitted coin? Just wondering.

 

I believe it was Dell Loy Hansen that bought it (see prior page of thread).
He is building the largest collection of coins and the top pop grade definitely played a part in the price.

 

It's definitely possible but I've seen less of that. That's mainly because people will pay more for the top toners in PCGS holders (registry and marketing bias). I wouldn't be surprised if some of those coins go back and forth between PCGS and NGC until the person maxes out the grade.
